As a surprise to no one, the Dodgers activated infielder David Freese from the 10-day injured list on Monday morning and optioned outfielder Kyle Garlick and infielder Edwin Ríos to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Freese has been sidelined with a left hamstring sprain since June 21. He has appeared in 56 games for the Dodgers, batting .308 (37-for-120) with eight homers and 23 RBI. Prior to going on the injured list, the infielder was batting .366 (15-for-41) with four homers and nine RBI in the month of June.
Garlick appeared in 25 games for the Dodgers, hitting .216 (8-for-27) with two homers and four RBI. The 27-year-old La Habra, CA native has been with the Dodgers organization since being drafted in the 28th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Cal Poly Pomona. In five minor league seasons, he is a .284 (440-for-1552) hitter with 80 homers and 257 RBI.
Ríos was called up on June 27 for his first stint with the Dodgers. The 25-year-old Caguas, Puerto Rico native appeared in eight games with the Dodgers, hitting .267 (4-for-15) with one double, one triple and one RBI. He recorded his first career hit and RBI in his first career start against Colorado on June 29. The former Florida International Panther has been with the Dodgers five seasons, compiling a .293 (452-for-1542) batting average with 78 homers and 283 RBI in 416 minor league games.
The Dodgers are expected to activate All-Star shortstop Corey Seager prior to Friday’s three-game series opener against the Boston Red Sox at historic Fenway Park. The 25-year-old Charlotte, NC native and Dodgers first round draft pick in 2012 has been on the 10-day IL since June 11 with a strained left hamstring. He appeared in two rehab games with the team’s Advanced Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes this past weekend, where he went 2-for-4 (.500) with one RBI. Prior to landing on the IL, Seager was really heating up, slashing .278 / .359 / .468 / .828 with eight home runs, 21 doubles, and 38 RBI.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Garlick and Rios packaged in a deal just so they can have a chance to play in the bigs somewhere because the moment they get sent back down to AAA OKC they will wind up becoming what I like to call “pipeline cloggers”. Can’t have that happening in a farm system that’s so deep right now due to the recent major 2019 draft signings that it’s already starting to back up again down at the lower levels even. Maybe at least one of them (Rios especially) could be used as a possible throw-in to help land that key bullpen arm for the postseason stretch??? Fingers crossed…
