BREAKING: Dodgers Call Up Dustin May

ThinkBlueLA has learned from a trusted source that the Dodgers have called up 21-year-old right-hander Dustin May from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

May, who was selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Northwest High School in his home town of Justin, TX, has been absolutely lights out for the OKC Dodgers since his promotion on June 27, going 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA in his five appearances, all starts. He has struck out 24 while walking only nine in his combined 27.1 innings pitched, without allowing a home run.

Just this past week, May was named the Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Week, an honor he also won with the Dodgers Double-A Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League on June 23, 2019, and with the Advanced Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League on May 27, 2018.

Although many Dodger fans are undoubtedly unhappy with the Dodgers’ lack of activity at Wednesday’s MLB trade deadline, they have to be ecstatic about May’s call-up to the major league Dodgers. (Photo credit – Joe Camporeale)

It is unknown at this time if the Dodgers plan to use the 6′-6″ / 180-pound right-hander with the bright flowing red hair as a starter or out of the bullpen. That being said, in his combined 78 appearances over his four-year minor league career, he has started all but five of them.

There has been no official confirmation from the Dodgers on May’s call-up, nor are the corresponding roster moves on both the 25-man and 40-man rosters known at this time.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman confirmed that Dustin May has indeed been called up from Triple-A OKC, although he did not indicate what the corresponding roster moves will be.

  7. @DustinNosler May is not on the full 40-man roster. Who do you think gets DFA to make room? Or transferred to 60-day IL?

  8. I was hoping to see him play in Vegas this weekend

About time! Dodgers will find a nice little spot for May on that staff where he can just continue honing his craft. As for the moves Friedman made at the deadline, I understand why he had to stand firm. Only player worth getting on that paltry trade market this season was Felipe Vazquez and the Pirates’ front office foolishly tipped their hand by doing what the Marlins did this past offseason: demand the other team’s best young player right off the bat without even doing their homework on the rest of the prospects in that team’s farm system. No way in hell was Gavin Lux going in a deal like that and they should’ve known better. Now their team is pretty much out of contention and stuck with the one player they could’ve dealt for at least a very solid package of prospects that might not be on the level of a Lux, but could end up contributing for them either right away or next season with little pressure put on them to perform.

That said, Jedd Gyorko felt more like your classic waiver wire deal that’s usually made after the July 31st deadline and that southpaw reliever they got from the Rays is alright despite not being the “sexier” option compared to a Vazquez. Kolarek has shown he can get lefties out consistently so far this season and he does provide insurance in case Scott Alexander can’t answer the bell due to another setback in his rehab.

Was really praying for Pederson to be moved, though. That was the one thing that DID piss me off regarding Friedman’s approach to the trade deadline. As long as he’s on the roster, Lux can’t be brought up and Beaty doesn’t get more ABs to build on his recent success at the plate. Wasted opportunity right there, no doubt about that…

A lot of open auditions for this bullpen. Competition and execution down the stretch will make this a tougher group to beat.

  12. Dan in Pasadena says:

    OUTSTANDING!

I’m guessing this was the backup plan all along if teams (Pirates, Mets) tried to hold up the Dodgers for more than other teams thinking they’d fold at the deadline. I’m glad Friedman kept Lux, May, Ruiz and of course Smith. Stick with the approach that has lead the Dodgers to now nearly seven Division titles and two – hopfully three – consecutive World Series after 28(?) years without once having gotten there.

Since May has been almost exclusively a starter I’m guessing Maeda gets moved to the pen and possibly Hill too if he can come back successfully.

  13. Ralph Miller Ralph Miller says:

@VinceSamperio Is he a starter or reliever?

  14. Mike Mike says:

Since we didn’t trade him today then I wanted to see him called up ASAP. Glad it’s happening. Now cal… https://t.co/6pgnEEHGk6

      That is my guess.

Earlier this season, Doc said that he expected to see May and Lux at some point this season. We are now halfway there.

  15. No wonder why they didn’t want to trade him
