As a surprise to absolutely no one, Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu has been named as Major League Baseball’s Nation League Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, May 12, 2019. Here is what the 32-year-old Incheon, South Korea native did to win the prestigious honor:
- Earned the victory in each of his two dominant starts last week, improving to 5-1 on the season. Across 17.0 innings pitched, logged 15 strikeouts without surrendering a run on five hits and one walk.
- Recorded his third career complete game, and second complete-game shutout on Tuesday night vs. Atlanta, scattering four hits to go along with six strikeouts. His 93 pitches in the outing were the fewest by a Dodgers hurler in a shutout since Hiroki Kuroda in 2008.
- In Sunday’s outing against the Washington Nationals, lost his no-hit bid in the eighth inning before exiting with 8.0 scoreless innings and nine punch outs.
- Permitted only his third walk of the season in Sunday’s start (52.1 IP), and his first since April 20 and owns a 18.00 SO/BB rate, easily the best in the Majors. His one walk on Sunday was his first allowed at Dodger Stadium since August 31, 2018.
In recognition of his NL Player of the Week Award, Ryu and Co-American League winners George Springer of the Houston Astros and Mike Fiers of the Oakland A’s will receive specially engraved watches courtesy of Artinian.
