Dodgers sign catcher Travis d’Arnaud

The Dodgers made a roster move on Sunday morning, although not the one most Dodger fans were expecting.

Within minutes of the Dodgers clubhouse being opened to the media, reports immediately began popping up on Twitter that 30-year-old catcher Travis d’Arnaud, who was unceremoniously released by the New York Mets on Friday, was in the Dodgers clubhouse being fitted for a uniform.

A short while later, the Dodgers released this statement:

The Dodgers today signed catcher Travis d’Arnaud to a one-year contract and placed him on the active roster. To make room on the 25-man roster, the Dodgers optioned infielder Matt Beaty to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

d’Arnaud, 30, was released by the New York Mets on Friday after appearing in 10 games this season. In 2017, the catcher played in a career-high 112 games, batting .244 (85-for-348) with a career-best 16 homers and 57 RBI. The backstop began the 2018 season as the Mets Opening Day starter but missed the majority of the 2018 season recovering from ulnar collateral ligament surgery in his right elbow. In his seven-year Major League career, d’Arnaud is a .242 (329-for-1360) hitter with 47 homers and 164 RBI in 407 games. The Long Beach, CA native was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the supplemental first round (37th overall) of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Lakewood High School (CA.).

Beaty, 26, was recalled on Tuesday and recorded his first career hit in his Major League debut later that evening. The infielder played in three games since being recalled, batting .667 (2-for-3) with an RBI. Prior to joining Los Angeles, Beaty was hitting .277 (23-for-83) with two homers and 10 RBI in 22 games for Oklahoma City.

  1. Travis d’Arnaud hardly played for the Mets since he’s been there, spending a lot of time on the DL. Here’s hoping he’s finally ready to be healthy.
I was thinking maybe the Dodgers would sign Kemp since he’s a right handed hitter, but I was wrong about that.

    • Ron Cervenka says:

Matt Kemp? Seriously? He was slashing .200 / .210 / .283 / .493 with Cincinnati. It’s a wonder that it took them this long to dump him.

As for d’Arnaud’s playing time with the Mets, he underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2017. That tends to screw up your playing time for about a year and a half.

Additionally, d’Arnaud can play every infield and outfield position. With Cincinnati, Kemp played in only 17 games … all in left field.

Besides, uniform number 27 is currently occupied by the potential 2019 Rookie of the Year.

Well, he’s not Daniel Robertson but if he’s healthy for once then this move could pay off pretty good for the Dodgers later on this season. d’Arnaud also has his fair share of playoff/WS experience so that’s a bonus in my eyes. Key for him still is, is he HEALTHY??? Dodger hitting coach just might have himself a nice little reclamation project on his hands in the meantime if that question is a resounding “yes”…
