It’s to the point now where it is getting difficult to come up with words to describe Dodgers right fielder Cody Bellinger, but somehow Dodgers popular broadcaster Joe Davis nailed it … again.
After his two impossible throws from deep right field on (appropriately) Memorial Day to first nail New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso at the plate for the second out of the first inning, and then his insanely impossible throw to nail Mets center fielder Carlos Gómez at third base to complete a double play in the top of the eighth inning to negate what would have been a run (by mere inches), the 31-year-old Dodgers broadcaster proclaimed Bellinger: “A right fielder from another planet.”
Although Jennifer and Clay Bellinger, Cody’s mom and dad, will obviously dispute this statement, the metaphor is certainly both appropriate and accurate. I mean, both throws, especially the one to third base on a fly to nail Gómez, seemed … alien-like.
“The first one was hit soft, I thought it had a weird spin on it and I was trying to charge it, pick it up first before I threw it,” Bellinger told reporters after the Dodgers eventual 9-5 win. “Russ [Martin] had a great tag, aimed for it and got him, and so, good on Russell’s part too.”
As for his absolutely brilliant throw to Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner, Bellinger’s foresight to throw there instead of home to complete the inning-ending double play thereby preventing a run from scoring, he yet again, as he often does, deflected the attention from himself to his teammates.
“My thought was to throw it as hard as I could, I didn’t think I had a chance at home, but I set my sights on third and just try to throw it accurate, and yeah, JT also had a great tag to get him before [the run scored], for sure.”
What did Dodgers manager Dave Roberts have to say about his young alien outfielder?
“Words are tough to come by. I don’t know if they give out Gold Gloves in May, but it’s hard to see it play out any other way.”
The Dodgers skipper added that there is really only one comparison to what Bellinger continues to do to impact games seemingly on a daily basis – Angels perennial All-Star outfielder Mike Trout.
“You’re talking about slug, average, on base, first-to-third, stolen bases, catching the baseball, outfield assists, all that stuff,” said Roberts. “To do what he can do, to check all those boxes. You’ve got to be careful when you’re talking about Mike Trout. That’s longevity, too. For a two-month span, that’s kind of what you’re talking about.”
Even Mets manager Mickey Callaway had high praise for the Dodgers young outfielder.
“It was just an unbelievable throw,” said Callaway. “You’re going to see that on highlights for the next 30 years. They’re going to be playing that over and over. It’s kind of like one of those throws Vlad [Guerrero] made 20 years ago. It was just an unbelievable play.”
Speaking about Bellinger’s slug, in addition to his two unworldly throws, the 23-year-old Scottsdale, AZ native and Dodgers fourth-round draft pick in 2013 out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, AZ also slugged his MLB second-best 19th home run of the season on Monday night; second to only Milwaukee Brewers Christian Yelich‘s 21.
From another planet indeed.

Cody Bellinger is one the best of all time Dodgers when it comes to both offensively and defensively, This is one time an outfielder truly save the game for all concerned. Outstanding.
@Dodgers @Cody_Bellinger @Jennifers_b7 @Joe_Davis great line delivered by Joe….:d
There is not much more I could add to what Bellinger has done and has become but he truly is THE BREAD & BUTTER guy on this Dodgers team. And if Andy & Co. are thinking of locking him up long term he should be the FIRST young Dodger to get an extension to keep him here for quite a long time.
Yasiel who? Dodgers certainly don’t miss him one bit, either offensively or defensively . Suffice it to say folks, that had Puig been in RF, that runner on 3rd would have scored and the game could have shifted easily to the Met’s side because NO WAY does Puig make that play and for one real reason… he would not have had the foresight to make a throw to 3rd to get that runner instead of home.
Bellinger’s already leading by example on this Dodger ballclub this season. Even Pederson of late is approaching his ABs in much the same manner, using the whole field and legging it out on every grounder and pop fly. And yeah, Puig would’ve definitely opted for the runner at home (wouldn’t have gotten the out there anyway, lol) and allowed the other runners to move up a base in that 8th inning last night. So glad he’s gone, Bellinger’s been an absolute revelation this year. Once again, THANK YOU LOGAN WHITE WHEREVER YOU ARE!!!
