You don’t realize just how good Dodgers broadcaster Joe Davis really is until he points things out that even the best baseball observers miss … or managers, or coaches, or trainers.
Had the popular 31-year-old modern-day version of Vin Scully (yes, he’s that good) not pointed out to viewers and even to his color analyst, former Dodger Nomar Garciaparra, during Monday night’s exciting 4-3 walk-off win over the Cincinnati Reds, we may have never known that 34-year-old Dodgers All-Star third baseman Justin Turner appears to be injured, or at the very least favoring a sore hamstring, calf, thigh, oblique, or (gulp) hip.
Although Davis said nothing after Turner’s first base hit in the bottom of the first inning or after his walk in the bottom of the third, the keen-eyed broadcaster noticed – and mentioned – that Turner grimaced and appeared to hobble and limp out of the batters box when he singled to left in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Sure enough, when the video geniuses at SportsNet LA brought up replays of both of Turner’s base hits and showed them in slow motion, you could (now) easily see what Davis had clearly seen – that Justin Turner appears to be hurt.
Obviously, this is the last thing Dodger fans want to hear about the guy who has long been considered the unofficial captain of the (now) 10-8 NL West second place Dodgers, especially after star right fielder / first baseman Cody Bellinger was forced to leave Monday’s game after being plunked squarely on the right knee with a 96-MPH fastball by Reds right-hander Luis Castillo. Even though X-rays came back negative on the Dodgers best overall player right now, one has to assume that he is going to miss some playing time.
Will Justin Turner be joining him?
Stay tuned…

Joe Davis nailed it. Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner is indeed injured and out of Tuesday’s line-up. This from Dodgers senior beat writer Ken Gurnick:

Wonderful passing along of info…
I missed this part somehow.
I love Joe Davis, and have done nothing, but rave about him in seasons past. This season however, I have come to the conclusion that he has room for improvement. Not that I can do better, just that as good as I think he is, I believe he will get better as he ages.
As far as Turner goes. I hope this is mostly nonsense and J.T. will continue to play and get stronger. If not? It’s a deep ball-club as Manuel has professed earlier.
Again, thanks for your time and great work.
I think Turner may have hurt himself in that game when he fielded a sharply-hit ball at the hot corner which looked like it got a nice piece of his upper leg/hip(?) in the process. Happened in one of the early innings, not sure which exactly. If he has to sit out as a result, fine. More playing time for Muncy (and maybe even Russell Martin, who’s been known to play some 3B from time to time). If they have to dip into their AAA roster, Edwin Rios, Connor Joe (glad they got him back from the rotten Giants, btw), and my favorite Will Smith (already mastering that level offensively so far this season and might get a call-up fairly soon anyway) can fill in no problem.
I will say this as far as Bellinger having been hit on the knee, that many saw that was done on purpose by that Red’s pitcher. And if that’s the case, the Dodgers need to send that ‘message’ right back and tonight, pluck on of the Red’s starting players, ya know an impact player like the player Cody is for us!
Kershaw stated in his interview last evening, that it wasn’t done maliciously…just passing what he said along, as to inform folks, is all.
Many always think it’s done on purpose.
It was just an inside pitch that got too far in. That’s all.
I will admit that right when it happened. My reaction was someone better nail one of them. But that would of been Kershaw and they don’t need to get him involved.
I guess we’ll find out a lot when the batting order comes out tonight.
I’m blacked out for Cincy games, so I was watching a different feed. JT is one of our most valuable players, an injury to him would be terrible. I feel like everyone plays better when JT is in the game.
Look at the bright side, Laura. I’m blacked out for Rockies games. That’s 19 games a year, plus national telecasts.
I’m blacked-out for the Mariner games. I know, once every 5 years or so, is not the same. I do feel your pain though.
Let us all remember that, as of last I’ve heard, fans in Los Angeles can’t get any Dodgers games unless they have Spectrum cable.
Maybe there’s been a change in that situation. I haven’t heard much said about it lately.
I find it astonishing that this group has scripted over 670,000 comments.
Opinionated bunch we are.
Turner is indeed injured, although according to Dave Roberts only slightly.
See above update.
@Joe_Davis Thanks, Ron! I was worried it was his troublesome hamstring.
