Give credit where credit is due

OK, fess up!  After the first weekend of the 2019 Major League Baseball season how many of you peeked at the stats pages of the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers? Purely for informational purposes, you wanted to compare the performances of Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Kyle Farmer, and Yasmani Grandal to their Dodgers’ replacements. Did you smirk just a bit when you read that those ex-Dodgers were hitless in 23 combined at-bats, with ten strike-outs, knowing that Austin Barnes, Russell Martin, A.J. Pollock, Cody Bellinger, Joc Pederson, and Alex Verdugo had sensational starts to their season? (Note: Alex Wood is on the Reds’ IL to start the season; true Dodgers and baseball fans take no delight when a player is injured).

First Series MVP honors clearly go to Dodgers right fielder / first baseman Cody Bellinger, who went 10-for-20 (.500) with four home runs and eight RBI in the four-game opening series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium.

While it is much too early for any crow-eating, those Dodgers’ fans and baseball analysts who scoffed at the Puig, Kemp, Wood, Farmer trade, and belittled the front office decisions on their replacements, may want to start searching for recipes. At the very least, acknowledge that Andrew Friedman and his front office team do a great job of assessing talent, and roster building.

You’ve heard, or read, the idiom countless times, usually in the context of someone reluctantly praising another’s accomplishment; “give credit where credit is due.” In baseball jargon, “tip-your-cap” for a job well done.  Friedman and company deserve a “tip-of-the-cap,” not only for the 2019 roster, but also the last several rosters, and returning the Dodgers minor league system to prominence.

No doubt there will be tweaks to the 2019 roster as the front office continues to consider ways to strengthen the team in its pursuit of another world championship. There will be bumps along the way, but Dodgers fans should enjoy the ride to reach the goal; this front office knows what it is doing — give it credit.

Go Dodgers!

Yup…….I looked……not so much Grandal, I’m glad he is gone, period….but definitely Puig…….and yea…….Grandal and Puig just keep racking up K’s……since our front office is so “know what it is doing”……how come Chris Taylor is still on the roster?

Consider how patient they were last season with Austin Barnes; expect the same for Taylor who is definitely having a rough 2019. Dodgers do have more backup options with Taylor than it had for Barnes, so a trip to OKC may be used at some point

Another unsung great player is AJ Pollock who I predict if healthy will put up very strong numbers.

  3. I don’t know about eating crow, but I think it’s much to early to start criticizing Puig, Kemp, Farmer and Grandal. Although I have to say, I wouldn’t want them to start beating on us when the time comes. I also think bluz1st is not giving Taylor any breathing room.

No intention of criticizing anyone other than taking some good natured pokes at those fans who were critical of Dodgers front office for trading away Kemp, Puig, Wood, and Farmer. I even mentioned that it was much too early for anyone to eat crow.
