Late Tuesday morning the Dodgers reported that the great Don Newcombe had died after a lengthy illness. Newk was 92.
Having come to know Don and his wife Karen personally at Dodger Stadium where they attended nearly every Dodgers home game, I am simply at a loss for words. Rather than even try, here is the official press release issued by the Dodgers:
“Don Newcombe had a ton of talent and he was a great competitor,” said 91-year-old Dodgers Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda, a former teammate of Newcombe. “He was a helluva pitcher and he was one of the best hitting pitchers I have ever seen”
“Mentor at first, friend at the end, missed by anyone who got to know him,” added Hall of Fame left-hander and former Newcombe teammate Sandy Koufax.
“Seeing him, how the last few months went for him, it’s the best for him to be in heaven today,” said Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen. “He’ll definitely be missed. I’m going to miss him a ton.”
The entire staff at ThinkBlue LA extends our sincerest sympathies, thoughts and prayers to Don’s wife Karen and to Don’s family, friends and colleagues.
RIP number 36.

Legend.
This is a huge loss.
Today, I find myself so furious that he didn’t get into the Hall. He deserved to see that.
So many years of being a fan, this is as if a family member has passed.
It was sad to hear the news today of the passing of Dodger legend Don Newcombe, one of the last links of the Dodgers when they were in Brooklyn. I was fortunate to meet Don and speak with him when I went to Dodger Stadium 10 years ago. My condolences to his family and love ones and may he rest in peace.
