The Eagles said it best in their 1977 multi-platinum hit song ‘Best of My Love’:
“You see it your way
And I see it mine
But we both see it slippin’ away”
According to multiple sources, 26-year-old perennial All-Star Bryce Harper will most likely be staying with the Washington Nationals, who have reportedly offered the Las Vegas, Nevada native and the 2010 number one overall draft pick “much more” than the initial 10-year / $300 million he was said to be seeking shortly after the 2018 season ended, when he became a free agent for the first time in his (now) seven-year MLB career.
While some Dodger fans may see this as good news – not wanting their team to tie up that kind of money for that many years, especially when they already have a plethora of young and very talented outfielders in the fold – a far greater number of Dodger fans are disappointed that they will not see the six-time All-Star, 2012 Rookie of the Year, 2015 National League MVP and Silver Slugger in Dodger Blue, time and money notwithstanding.
As most fans knows, the Dodgers were willing to give Harper a higher AAV (Annual Average Value – i.e., more money per year) but for fewer that the 10-years he was seeking. In fact, at one point it was rumored that the Dodgers and the star outfielder were actually very close to a deal. It now appears, however, that this was never the case and indeed nothing more than a rumor, as, according to Bowden, the 10-year / $300 million figure was actually the starting point; at least for the Nationals.
As tough as it may be for Dodger fans, it’s time to move on.
…at least until next off-season, when future Hall of Famer Mike Trout becomes a free agent for the first time.
Stay tuned…
Doesn’t Trout have two more seasons to go until he’s a free-agent?
However, Arenado, Goldschmidt, Sale, Cole, Rendon, Bogaerts, Ozuna and Gennett are all free-agents in 2019. A number of these guys would be a better fit for the Dodgers than Harper.
You are correct. Trout becomes a free agent in 2021. I was looking at the wrong BR page. My bad.
At least the Dodgers will have two more seasons to save their shekels.
That would work well for Trout. He doesn’t even have to move.
BTW, it’s still good to see that guy with the 5 on his back at SS.
I always LOVE using that photo, even though Harper singled and the Dodgers (and Kershaw) lost 5-2.
I thought that was the same photo that I made a similar comment on once before.
You can’t blame any team to want to hold on to a player like Harper. Their fans must be happy to read news such as this. Well, if this is the way it’s going to go, at least, we know the Dodgers are holding on to a great deal of money, which we hope they will use wisely.
It’s all about the money, Joe.
Well then, if indeed Harper returns to the Nats, so be it. By the way i firmly believe obtaining an impact RH bat is much more of a need at this time. Ya know, one that can be put in the middle of the lineup DAILY! and NO PLATOONING!
paraphrasing Rhett Butler, frankly I do not give a damn. Love to have Harper for a reasonable contract, but with him and a terrific roster the Nationals have not even been able to win the NL Pennant while the Dodgers have been to WS in last 2 seasons. AND, I believe Boras will do anything to get his client and himself an advantage, including leaking false information. If Harper signs with the Dodgers, great; if not, the Dodgers will go in a different direction and be the odds on favorite to represent the NL in the 2019 WS. GO DODGERS!
