It was being reported on Saturday afternoon the the Dodgers are in negotiations with 31-year-old free agent outfielder A.J. Pollock, per Ken Rosenthal of The Atlantic (subscription required).
Although the burning question for Dodger fans is: Why on earth would the Dodgers be even remotely interested in yet another outfielder when, as Rosenthal notes, they already have “depth and versatility” at all three outfield position. The obvious and simple answer to that is a right-handed bat on a very left-handed heavy team, and a very good right-handed bat at that.
In his seven-year MLB career, all with the Arizona Diamondbacks who drafted him out of the University of Notre Dame in the first round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Hebron, Connecticut native has a solid career slash-line of .281 / .338 / .467 / for an excellent .805 OPS. And even though Pollock isn’t necessarily know for his home run power, he is a former All-Star (2015) and is a Gold Glove winner (ditto).
But there is another method to Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman’s madness regarding Pollock – against the Dodgers, Pollock has been a royal pain in the … neck.
Over his seven big league seasons, Pollock has a career slash-line of .291 / .352 / .532 / .884 against the Dodgers, with 17 home runs, 43 RBI, and nine stolen bases. If he can replicate these numbers against his former team and the rest of the NL West, and the entire National League, he could prove to be a royal pain in the … neck for them as well.
Stay tuned…

From reading all the articles and reports ever since the season ended the Dodgers have seemingly been “in” on just about every free agent. So far, they have signed just one. Wake me when something *for real* takes place. Too bad Twitter exists for this kind of just-the-facts-ma’am, hard-hitting, in-depth Investigative Reporting.
If you do not like or approve of our (or Twitter’s) “just-the-facts-ma’am, hard-hitting, in-depth Investigative Reporting,” you most certainly have options.
Also, you’d best set your own alarm clock.
Have a great day.
Ken Rosenthal: “Dodgers are indeed in discussions with Pollock”.
I bet discussions were like:
Friedman: If you are still unsigned on June 3, 2019 when we wouldn’t have to forfeit the 31st pick in the upcoming draft lets talk.
Pollock: Yeah, OK, maybe.
Friedman: See ya then, good luck.
NICE!
Report this morning that Dodgers are discussing a trade that would send Pederson to the Chisox. No other names mentioned, I don’t see Dodgers pursuing Jose Abreu who will receive $16MM this year before free agency.
With three lefties, that only play the outfield, coupled with another lefty outfielder, Bellinger and the “possibility” of Muncy needing to move to left field after the Machado acquisition. I can definitely see the desire to trade a lefty outfielder. Toles has 4 yrs of control, Verdugo 5 yrs, probably means Pederson is the odd man out.
I’d think Pederson would be a valuable trade chip, reasonable salary ($5M), two years of control and he a had pretty good year in 2018. I don’t see any obvious trade targets on Chicago’s roster. Trade him for prospects?
That’s what I was thinking, a couple of good prospects like 2b/SS Nick Madrigal and 3b Jake Burger; LH’er Carlos Rodon could be a target as well.
And as ya mentioned before, those prospects from the Sox could be flipped in a deal for Realmuto, as I just cannot see JT Realmuto wanting to stay in Miami at this point. And besides that Russell Martin can play other positions as well, thereby having Realmuto and Barnes doing the bulk of the catching. But then Barnes might be involved in the deal for Miami as well. In that case, no real loss with Barnes going to Marlins.
As I’ve said before, I’ve been wondering if Friedman was taking a look at Pollock.
