Dodgers announce booth changes for 2019

The Dodgers have announced the addition of Tim Neverett to their broadcast team. Neverett will call a select number of Dodger games on both television and radio, handling play-by-play duties on SportsNet LA during Joe Davis’s national assignments and on AM 570 in place of Charley Steiner, who requested to cut back on his broadcast schedule.

“We’re excited to welcome Tim to our broadcast team, and know Dodger fans will appreciate his knowledge, passion and insight on the air,” said Lon Rosen, Dodger Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “The Dodgers are also thrilled that Charley will continue to be part of the team’s broadcasts for years to come. We think the addition of Tim along with Charley, Joe and our talented group of analysts and reporters will continue to treat Dodger fans to one of the best broadcasts in baseball.”

The 52-year-old Neverett served as the radio play-by-play voice of the Boston Red Sox for the past three seasons following a seven-year stint as the radio and television play-by-play announcer for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Before joining the Pirates, Neverett spent four years working for FSN Rocky Mountain, including as a studio host for Colorado Rockies games during the 2008 season. He also served the network as a play-by-play announcer for Rockies games, college football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, arena football, and track and field.

Neverett also hosted talk shows for both the nationally syndicated Sporting News Radio Network and ESPN 560 in Denver, Colorado, where he was named the 2005 Best Radio Sports-Talk Host by Westword magazine. Prior to his time in Denver, Neverett lived in Las Vegas, calling games on radio and TV for the Padres’ and Dodgers’ Triple-A teams as well as Las Vegas’ International Hockey League team and the UNLV baseball and football teams.

Neverett began his broadcasting career in 1985 with Pittsburgh’s Double-A affiliate Nashua and also called baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer as well as hockey and skiing during four Olympic Games from 2002-2008.

“I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to join such an established and talented group of radio and television broadcasters, as well as the gifted production personnel with the Dodgers,” said Neverett. “My family and I are thrilled to be able to be part of the Dodger family and be back in the National League. I am very much looking forward to getting started, renewing old acquaintances and making new ones.”

The Dodgers also agreed to a contract extension through the 2021 season with Steiner, who is entering his 15thh season as the club’s play-by-play announcer.

“I am thankful to Mark, Stan, Tucker and Lon for their understanding of my desire to cut back on my schedule and extending my contract to allow me to continue doing what I love,” said Steiner. “Father Time, Mother Nature, and the road have never lost a battle. I’m just trying to keep pace with those three, and hopefully getting to call the final out of the Dodgers’ next championship. Tim will be a great addition to the Dodger broadcast, and I am so thrilled to have him join the Dodger family.”

Not a fan of Steiner so I am looking forward to hearing Neverette call Dodgers games. A little off topic, but I believe Alanna Rizzo would be a first rate play-by-play announcer. She may not want the time and travel commitment, but ability wise Alanna is right up there with any currently on Dodgers staff.

I’ve got to agree with you on all points plus she’s better looking than Charlie.

      • James2 says:

        “…better looking than Charlie.”

When he was on ESPN someone commented that he had the voice –and looks– for radio. Ouch. Anyway… more Alanna, please.

  2. Dave says:

Have to agree on the Charley Steiner situation, not a fan of his play calling. I think Rick Monday does a fine job, enjoy his color analysis or as play by play caller. Alanna does a fine job and was good at her craft when sh was with the Rockies broadcasts.

Why was Joe Davis yanked off the air? Wasn’t he ra ra enough tor their over biased staff?

    • Ron Cervenka says:

Joe occasionally does National broadcasts for Fox, which was Yankees/Red Sox this weekend. He will be back Monday in AZ.

    • jalex says:

we would be SOOO much better off with Monday doing the play by play. since so many of us cant watch the games, it down right sucks to have steiner whooping and hollering but failing to explain the action. saturday night he pulls his typical”swing and a miss, he strikes him out!!” to which Rick notes, “he fouled it off, he’s still up there” CS replied “oh, ya”. watching the blog site highlights, i get that davis does a lot of rah rah but, i guess, he assumes you’re watching the action.

      • Ron Cervenka says:

You will get ZERO argument out of me on this. I’m NOT a Charlie Steiner fan and WAAAAY less a Tim Neverett fan. Rick Monday and Kevin Kennedy absolutely positively should be the radio PBP team.

        • SoCalBum says:

SPOT ON! Although Steiner is at the very bottom of my list. Hard to understand what the Dodgers like about his overall body of work. Kenndy and Monday would be awesome!

    • Barbara Fiero says:

Joe Davis is the best. Especially with Hershiser – great team! Bring him back. Now.

  4. Kevin Sutton says:

If Charlie Steiner tells us one more time that Hotel California came out however many years it was before Cody Bellinger was born, I think I will scream .

  5. Danny Perry says:

Tim Neverett is great! He has a smooth way of making you feel like you are at the game. Listening to the Dodgers since 1963, he reminds me of the Vin Scully with Jerry Doggett of that time. Tim, call as many games as possible!!

    • Ron Cervenka says:

Definitely a matter of opinion. In mine, he is the worst broadcaster the Dodgers have ever had. I can certainly see why he was fired by Boston. Nobody likes working with him.

  6. Richard Barrett says:

Tim Neveritt is AWFUL!!! He has a football voice. He speaks in annoying quick spurts, which is not suitable for baseball! Baseball requires a conversational tone. Geez, did you guys never listen to Scully?! At least the younger guy gets the Scully template! Did you draw Neveritt’s name from a hat? This is the best you could find for Dodger baseball?!

I am a life long Dodger fan passed season ticket holder. A suffer of 2 seasons without Dodgers on T V, I now watch very game. The truth be told it’s a struggle
listing to Joe Davis who is beyond analytical and Oral is suddenly not only a pitching expert but also a hitting guru. These two are to folksy for me to the extent I mute the voice most games. Joe Davis is a good football voice but is not the voice I want to hear announce the Dodgers. GarciaParra and Alanna Rizzo are excellent. Please it’s a baseball game talk baseball less is better!
