As if things couldn’t get any worse for 24-year-old Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager, it was being widely reported on Monday afternoon that the Charlotte, North Carolina native and Dodgers 2012 first-round draft pick – who is already on the shelf recovering from May 4, 2018 Tommy John surgery – will now have arthroscopic surgery on his left hip on Tuesday morning in New York.
Although Monday’s news was less than ideal, the silver lining – if you can call it that – is that the 2016 National League’s Rookie of the Year, two-time All-Star, and two-time Silver Slugger is expected to resume baseball activities in January 2019, which is when he would have anyway following his right elbow surgery.
Seager, who boasts a very impressive .302 / .372 / .494 / .866 career slash-line over his four major league seasons, appeared in 26 games this season prior to going on the disabled list on April 30 with a right UCL sprain. At the time, the 6′-4″ / 220-pound right-handed throwing / left-handed hitting shortstop was hitting .267 with two home runs.
Tuesday’s surgery will be performed by noted orthopedic specialist Dr. Bryan Kelly.
