Pantone 294 – The 10th Man

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or on an extended vacation to another planet for the past several years, every Dodger fan on this planet knows who – and what – the Pantone 294 are.

By definition, Pantone 294 is the official color code for the color that we all affectionately call Dodger Blue. But from a fan’s perspective, the Pantone 294 Dodgers fan group is, hands down, the largest travelling fan group in all of baseball, and there isn’t a close second.

Oh sure, there are your typical crosstown rival-based fan groups, like those between the Yankees and Mets, and the Bay Bridge rivalry between the Giants and Athletics, but nowhere, and I mean nowhere, will you find a fan group that will travel across the entire country in support of their beloved team like the Pantone 294 do every season – period.

If, by chance, you do live under a rock or have been on an extended vacation to another planet, here is an article that we ran two years ago on the Pantonés (as owners Alex Soto and Desiree Garcia affectionately call their group): The Pantone 294 – Who are these guys?

Dodger fans who watched, listened to, or were at Tuesday night’s game between Dodgers and Oakland A’s at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum not only saw and heard the Pantonés huge presence on the SportsNet LA television broadcast and on the AM 570 LA Sports radio broadcast, but they also saw and heard about them quite often by SNLA’s Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser, and by AM 570’s Charlie Steiner and Rick Monday, and justifiably so.

“There were 500+ people who bought tickets around us,” said Soto about the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum “stadium takeover,” as they call their road trips.

According to Pantone 294 owner Alex Soto, there were more that 500 Dodger fans in and around their group at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Tuesday night as the Dodgers’ 10th man.

But what do the Dodger players think about a (large) group of their fans traveling great distances to root them on?

“It’s always cool to see Pantone 294 take over stadiums,” Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling told ThinkBlueLA. “They made Oakland feel like a home game last night, which just gives us confidence and gets our guys excited to play.

“It means a lot and is special to be able to play on a team that has that kind of following, knowing Dodgers fans are going to travel and show up for us no matter where we’re playing,” Stripling added. “Very few teams have that kind of support from their fan base and the Pantone group goes out of their way a few times a year to make road games that much more special for us.”

“It was so much fun and I got to be right under the flag,” said Pantone 294 member @MargaretMorneau.

If this isn’t “The 10th man” (or 11th, if you count the designated hitter during interleague play at American League ballparks), nothing is.

But wait, there’s more!

The Pantone 294 will also be at the Saturday, August 18 game at Safeco Field in Seattle, when the Mariners host the Dodgers.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that if you haven’t already purchased your tickets for that one, you’re out of luck – it’s sold out. There are, however, still a limited number of tickets for two of their three scheduled private Boat Parties on Friday August 17 (for the 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and the 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm cruises only). The Boat Parties offer Dodger fans a spectacular view of Seattle Bay and includes a cash bar and a live DJ.

The Seattle skyline at night is absolutely breathtaking, especially during a harbor cruise.
