‘Only in Hollywood’ to premiere July 15 on MLB Network

Dodger fans who were not yet born (or too young to remember) the Dodgers ‘improbable-impossible’ World Series win in 1988, missed what was unquestionably the single greatest sports memory in Los Angeles history. It occurred exactly 30 years after former Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley moved his iconic team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, and it occurred exactly 30 years ago this season.

Over the years since that historic and memorable World Series, much has been written about it, complete with the video clips of Kirk Gibson’s epic home run in Game-1 on October 15, 1988, which even to this day is still considered to be the single greatest home run in World Series history.

But much, perhaps even most, of the Dodgers journey during that historic 1988 season has either never been told or forgotten.

…until now.

On Tuesday evening at the iHeartRadio theater in Burbank, California a mere 11 miles from where Gibson hit his epic home run, a select group of Dodger fans were invited to a special screening of ‘Only in Hollywood’, an exclusive and in-depth MLB Network production that encapsulates the 1988 Dodgers season from start to finish, culminating with the Gibson home run and the eventual improbable-impossible four-games-to-one series win by the Dodgers over the (very) heavily favored Oakland Athletics.

On hand for the private screening were 1988 World Series MVP Orel Hershiser and the man who assembled that unlikely band of heroes (dubbed The Stunt Men), former Dodgers general manager Fred Clair, who conducted a Q and A session with those in attendance following the screening, which was moderated by longtime KNBC-TV sports anchor and AM 570 LA Sports Lunchtime with Roggin and Rodney’ co-host Fred Roggin.

But those blessed to attend the event, which included incredible hors d’oeuvres, adult beverages and soft drinks, and typical theater fare, receive an even greater treat. The screening was introduced by none other than Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully who, of course, concluded his (all-too-brief) intro with his famous words: “It’s tiiiiime for Dodger baseball!”

Although the premiere screening of ‘Only in Hollywood’ was outstanding, having the great Vin Scully introduce it made it even more so. (Photo credit – Ron Cervenka)

‘Only in Hollywood’ will premiere on MLB Network on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. PT, with an encore showing at 7:00 p.m. PT; and I must say, this is a Must-See movie for every Dodger fan on the planet.

…because, as Vin Scully said, “I think you’ll be pleased with how it ends.”

Any chance this will be coming out on video or mlb.com? MLB Network isn’t available here.

I haven’t heard anything to that effect. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up on YouTube at some point. Definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

Just one of the problems with being a Dodgers fan in Rockies country (both the team and the mountains that put Bummer on the DL, in this case).
OK, old news, but I just like repeating it.

  2. I Saw it and it was fabulous! I’m from Brooklyn and have been a Dodger fan, since’55!!! I cried throughout the show!!! It reminded me of where I was in my life, 30 years ago!!! I remember it like it was yesterday!!! Very emotional, when OreL got choked up about Tommy and the rest of his teammates!!! Great having Gibby re-tell the Mel Didier info! A must-see for every real Dodger fan!!!

My daughter lives in Brooklyn and I visit her every year. I can’t explain it, but every time I do, the Dodgers happen to be in town. Quite a coincidence, huh.

Perhaps we can meet up on my next visit and talk about the good ol’ days.
