The Dodgers have placed left-hander Clayton Kershaw back on the 10-day disabled list with a lower back strain and have recalled right-hander Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Kershaw, who was activated from the disabled list prior to Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Dodger Stadium, allowed one run on four hits, while striking out five and walking one in his 5.0 innings pitched. He was removed from the game after experiencing lower back discomfort and underwent an MRI on Friday morning, which confirmed the lower back strain.
The Dallas, Texas native and seven-time All-Star, three-time NL Cy Young award winner, and 2014 NL MVP has made eight starts this season, going 1-4 with a 2.76 ERA, while limiting opposing hitters to a .233 batting average. He has struck out 53 and walked 11 in his combined 49.0 innings pitched thus far this season.
This is Stewart’s fifth stint with the big league club this year. The 26-year-old Normal, Illinois native has appeared in five games (two starts) with the Dodgers, with no record and a 4.61 ERA. He has struck out 11 and walked six in his combined 13.2 innings of work with the LA Dodgers this season.
At Triple-A Oklahoma City, Stewart has made five starts, posting a 1-0 record and 2.08 ERA over 21.2 innings pitched. He has 22 strikeouts while issuing only eight walks at OKC, while limiting opposing hitters to a .278 batting average.
Well it looks like the Dodgers will have to do without Kershaw, at least, for a while longer. It’s hard to say what the future holds. It’s good to see how well the team is doing without him, but it’s certain they will need him back sooner or later. Here’s hoping there’s better news to follow.
