The Dodgers have claimed left-handed pitcher P.J. Conlon off waivers from the New York Mets and transferred left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (left groin tear) to the 60-day disabled list. Conlon will be assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Conlon made his Major League debut with the Mets on May 7, 2018, with no record and a 11.12 ERA with two strikeouts over his two starts and combined 5.2 innings pitched. In his 77 career minor league games (53 starts), Colon posted a 22-15 record and 2.85 ERA, while tossing three complete-games and picking up two saves He also limited opposing hitters to a .241 batting average.
The 30-year-old lefty is only the second Belfast native to play in the majors, with left-hander Henry “Irish” McIlveen being the first back in 1906, 1908-1909 with Pittsburgh and the New York Highlanders. Conlon is the 46th Irish-born player to play in the majors and the first since Joe Cleary pitched for the Washington Senators on August 4, 1945.
Prior to injuring his left groin during a May 2 game against Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, the 31-year-old Ryu was 3-0 with a 2.12 ERA. And even though Dodgers manager recently said that the popular Incheon, South Korea native is progressing faster than initially expected, the Dodgers weren’t planning on his return until after the All-Star break anyway and a 60-day DL stint was inevitable.
