Hill hoping to get MLB to change rule on pitching with bandaged fingers

When Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was forced to remove 38-year-old left-hander Rich Hill after only two pitches due to a reoccurring blister on his left middle finger last Saturday, he told reporters that the Boston, Massachusetts native and 14-year MLB veteran would more than likely be on the disabled list for at least four weeks and quite possibly longer. But anyone who has ever had the pleasure of talking with the extremely polite and intensely competitive lefty knows full well that this does not – and will not – sit well with Hill.

Sure enough, only two days after Roberts broke this disappointing news and much to the surprise of everyone, the veteran left-hander was observed already playing catch.

Following his workout, MLB.com Dodgers beat writer Ken Gurnick asked Hill about this surprise and, as expected, the always brutally honest lefty was… well, brutally honest.

But wait, there’s more!

On Tuesday, Hill did the unimaginable … he actually threw his regularly-scheduled bullpen session, albeit with a Band-Aid on his injured finger.

Although Hill indicated that he has not yet contacted anyone at the MLB commissioners office regarding having them considering allowing him to pitch with a Band-Aid or other wrapping on his finger, he may do so depending on the progress of his healing finger.

That being said, one has to imagine that this will probably be met with considerable resistance from the league office and it would probably have to be addressed through the MLB Players Association, which would undoubtedly take considerably longer than four weeks, if you get my drift.

Regardless of your opinion of Rich Hill, it is impossible not to admire his courage and tenacity in trying to get back to action as quickly as possible.

  1. It is truly unfortunate that Hill is not allow to put a foreign substance on his fingers.

    Great article

I’d be surprised if they allow that, but if they do:
They umpire would, and should, be required to inspect the band-aid (or whatever) before he puts it on, maybe even put it on in the umpire’s presence. If he needs to change it during the game (likely) it would be a simple matter to show the new one to the umpire.
Drawback: Once the door’s open, even if Rich plays it straight, there are sure to be others who will try to take advantage of it for devious purposes.

      Couldn’t agree more.

I don’t see it ever happening primarily because of your second point. SOMEONE would eventually use it to cheat.

I most certainly would never suspect Rich Hill of trying to gain an unfair advantage here. He is a fierce competitor and just want to play.
