It took all of one play for the ball to find Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager in his second game on defense on Wednesday afternoon, as he works his way back from elbow inflammation.
“Right off the chute,” Seager said, about the first ball being hit to him in a B-game on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s nice to get ground balls too, just to work on foot work, but really just kind of trying to be on time.”
The 23-year-old 23 Charlotte, North Carolina native and 2016 National League Rookie of the Year has been on an extended throwing program this spring, after injuring his right elbow last season.
“It was good, got seven innings, nice to be out there that long,” said Seager. “Each inning I got more and more comfortable.”
Although Dodgers manager Dave Roberts wasn’t on hand to personally witness Seager’s outing, which also included a five-inning start by Dodgers left-hander Alex Wood, with Yasmani Grandal doing the catching, he received a full report from his coaching staff and liked what he heard.
“It’s just about getting his workload up and building his body up,” Roberts said.
Roberts also told reporters that the next step for his young shortstop is to get him in back-to-back games, and that Seager’s first Cactus League game of the spring at shortstop will be on Friday evening, when the Dodgers play the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Field.
