Although the Dodgers have yet to officially announce their 25-man World Series roster, it appears that 23-year-old shortstop Corey Seager, who missed out on celebrating the Dodgers winning their first National League pennant in 29 years with his teammates in Chicago, will be on it.
Seager, who was left off of the National League Championship Series roster due to a sprained lower back that he suffered while sliding into second base during game-3 of the Division Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on October 9, participated in a full team workout on Sunday afternoon, and afterwards told reporters that he’s good to go for the World Series.
“Like I said before, I didn’t want to be a distraction, I didn’t want to slow anything down, it wasn’t the right play to do that,” Seager told SportsNet LA’s Alanna Rizzo, following the afternoon portion of Sunday’s workout. “It was the right move to stay back as much as it sucked, as much as you couldn’t celebrate and be there with your team.
“It was the right move. It made me feel a lot better, got to do what I needed to do, and fortunately I’m ready to go now,” he added.
During Sunday’s late afternoon / early evening workout at Dodger Stadium, the 6′-4″ / 220-pound Charlotte, North Carolina native and Dodgers 2012 first-round draft pick took batting practice, ran curves, and fielded grounders in preparation for Tuesday’s 2017 World Series opener against the Houston Astros at Dodger Stadium.
“It’s fun, it’s fun being out here with the team. It’s fun just being a part of it,” said Seager. “It’s exciting, obviously it’s really an exciting time, and it feels great, honestly. I haven’t smiled in a while so it’s nice to smile again.”
So what’s next for Seager to prove to himself and to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and team trainers that he’s 100 percent and ready to rejoin the team?
“There’s one more step, I’m going to face some live pitching today (off of Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu) and that’s really the last thing I really need to do,” Seager said. “Other than that I feel great, everything, and there’s been no limitations, no anything with it.”
If all goes according to plan, Seager said that he will be available to play shortstop on defense or be used as the team’s designated hitter when the series moves to Houston for games three, four and five (if needed). He also acknowledged that the final decision is up to Dave Roberts, not him.
“That’s really up to him, I don’t make the lineup,” said the young Dodgers shortstop. “But I’m good to go with whatever he needs.”
In my opinion, I think this is great news.
facing Ryu a precursor to staring against Keuchel — I HOPE
That’s the way I saw it too.
