Trayce Thompson ‘A hundred percent healthy’ and ready for 2017 season

It only takes one quick look at the Dodgers 2017 spring training stats to immediately notice that Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson did not have the spring training that he undoubtedly had hoped for. In fact, his .226 batting average (with only the three annual Freeway Series games remaining) ranked 28th among the 55 Dodgers who had an at-bat this spring.

However, in addition to his impressive .351 on-base percentage that included seven hits (including a home run) and six walks, the 26-year-old brother of Golden State Warriors superstar Klay Thompson was absolutely brilliant with the glove, making several sensational catches.

But in spite of his less-than-stellar spring training slash-line of .226 / .351 / .323 for an OPS of .674, the extremely polite and humble Los Angeles, California native is pleased with his second major league spring training camp with the Dodgers and, more importantly, claims to be completely healthy as the team breaks camp.

“I feel a hundred percent healthy, so that’s good,” said the former 2009 second round draft pick who was acquired by the Dodgers from the Chicago White Sox in the multi-team / multi-player Todd Frazier deal in late 2015. “I would have liked to have gotten more at-bats. I definitely had some on the minor league side, obviously, that don’t show up on paper, but it’s gone well considering that I’m healthy. I feel extremely happy about that.

“Obviously, you always want to do better baseball-wise. It doesn’t matter if I’m hitting .400, you can always do better. I’m just excited that I’m healthy and ready to go,” Thompson added.

Even though Thompson didn’t have the offensive spring he had hoped for, he did hit one home run, drove in three runs and collected six walks. But will this be enough for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to include him on the Opening Day roster? (Photo credit – Ron Cervenka)

As Dodger fans recall, Thompson was shut down completely last August when it was learned that the back discomfort he was experiencing was actually the result of what was described as “multiple fractures in his back.” This led to the Dodgers being extremely cautious with him when he showed for for spring training.

But soon Thompson was doing a lot more than just running. Three weeks later he appeared in his first spring training game (against the Angels, coincidentally) and four days after that he slugged a two-run home run against the Seattle Mariners at Peoria Stadium.

But has Thompson’s spring gone well enough for him to make the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster with only the three Freeway Series games remaining?

“I haven’t heard a thing,” Thompson said. “But I feel good, I’ve been running around at the games I have played in, I had a lot of action, been running around a lot, so that’s good. I’m just ready to go.”

…as are we, Trayce.

Hope Thompson becomes an All Star with Dodgers, but I remain skeptical. I believe Chisox sold high on Thompson after the 2015 season and the trade that sent Schebler, Peraza, and Dixon to the Reds with Dodgers getting Thompson, Montas, and Johnson is decidedly in favor of the Reds.
