Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts has been selected 2016 Coach of the Year by the Los Angeles Sports Council. Roberts will be honored at the 12th Annual LA Sports Awards, to be held on Monday, February 27 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Additionally, five Dodger moments are in the running to be named among the Top 10 Greatest Sports Moments in 2016. Southern California sports fans can rank the Top 10 Greatest Sports Moments.
In his first year as manager of a pro team at any level, Roberts was named National League Manager of the Year, the first Dodger manager so honored since Tommy Lasorda in 1988. In leading the Dodgers to their fourth straight Western Division title, an NLCS appearance and to within two games of the World Series, he overcame a major league record number of injuries, as 28 players spent time on the disabled list during the season. Roberts’ upbeat attitude and team-first approach spread throughout the clubhouse and helped set the tone for a successful campaign.
A total of fifteen (15) great sports moments in 2016 are on the ballot to be reviewed by SoCal sports fans and then ranked as their Top 10 selections. The 15 nominees were nominated by a regional media panel that reviewed and selected ‘moments’ from sports teams in Los Angeles and Orange Counties as well as moments that occurred outside the counties but involved a local team or athletes.
The public vote is combined with the media panel votes/ranking for the final Top 10 list. The five Dodgers moments in contention to make the Top 10 are:
- Vin Scully’s Final Season as Voice of the Dodgers (April 6-November 22)
- Dodgers Clinch NL West at Vin Scully’s Last Home Game (September 25)
- Dodgers Win NLDS on Clayton Kershaw’s First-Ever Save (at Washington, D.C. (October 14)
- Corey Seager Named National League Rookie of the Year (November 14)
- Dave Roberts Named National League Manager of the Year (November 15)
