As if there were ever any doubt, Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager has been named the 2016 National League Rookie of the Year. The announcement came Monday afternoon shortly after 2:00 pm PT on MLB Network Television and Radio. The vote was unanimous, with Seager receiving all 30 first place votes.
Although Seager’s competition was extremely formidable in Washington Nationals outfielder Trea Turner and fellow Dodgers right-hander Kenta Maeda, there was really little doubt that the 22-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina native and brother of Seattle Mariners star third baseman Kyle Seager would walk away with the NL Rookie of the Year hardware.
Seager posted an outstanding slash-line of .308 / .365 / .512 for an impressive .877 OPS in his first full season. He also slugged 26 home runs while driving in 72 runs for the NL West-champion Dodgers.
Last week Seager was honored with his first of what is expected to be many Silver Slugger awards – the first ever for a Dodgers shortstop – and was selected as the Players Choice National League Outstanding Rookie of the Year.
Seager is also among the three finalists for the prestigious 2016 NL MVP, along with Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant and Nationals infielder Daniel Murphy. The winner of baseball’s Holy Grail will be announced on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 3:00 pm PT, to also be aired on MLB Network Television and Radio. Although many consider Bryant the favorite to win, Seager joins Joe Black (1952) as the only Dodger in franchise history to be named Rookie of the Year and among the top three in the MVP award in the same year.
Congratulations, It was well deserved. First Dodger winner in a long time, although we have the most.
