The Dodgers have added newly acquired outfielder Josh Reddick and right-handed reliever Jesse Chavez to their 25-man roster. The 29-year-old Reddick and 32-year-old Chavez were acquired just prior to Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline from the Oakland A’s and Toronto Blue Jays respectively.
On the season Reddick is hitting .296 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 68 games and has hit safely in nine of his last 11 games since July 18, having gone 14 for 44 (.318) during that stretch. But unquestionably his biggest asset to the Dodgers is his .341 batting average with runners in scoring position and .319 average with runners on base. That being said, none of his 20 extra-base hits have come off of lefties for the right-handed throwing, left-handed hitting Savannah, Georgia native.
Chavez posted a 1-2 record and 4.57 ERA in his 39 games with the Blue Jays this season. The 32-year-old Riverside, California native and lifelong Dodger fan held opposing right-handed hitters to a .245 batting average against and had an impressive 4.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 42 strikeouts while walking only 10 in his 39 relief appearances with the Blue Jays this season.
Although the Reddick acquisition is huge for the Dodgers, it was Monday’s acquisition of 36-year-old right-hander Rich Hill – also from the A’s – that could be the difference in the Dodgers making it to the postseason or watching it on television. Although Hill is currently on the disabled list for a blister on his pitching hand (as of July 18), he is technically eligible to return to the Dodgers rotation today, although the Dodgers are leaving him on the DL for now. In fact, he threw long toss earlier this afternoon at Coors Field – where the Dodgers begin a three-game series with the Rockies this evening – and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday. While with the A’s, Hill posted a 9-3 record with an American League-best 2.25 ERA in 14 starts. He limited opposing batters to a .201 batting average against and also led the AL in fewest home runs allowed per nine innings at 0.24 in his 76.0 innings pitched.
To create room on the 25-man roster for Reddick and Chavez the Dodgers optioned outfielder Yasiel Puig, right-hander Ross Stripling and newly acquired right-hander Josh Fields to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The soon-to-be 31-year-old Fields went 1-0 with one save and a 1.65 ERA in 23 relief appearances with the Astros’ Triple-A affiliate Fresno Grizzlies this season. The Athens, Georgia native also made 15 relief appearances for the Astros this season posting a less-than-stellar 6.89 ERA.
In his 81 games with the Dodgers this season, Puig hit .260 with seven home runs and 34 RBIs. The Dodgers made it blatantly clear that they wanted to trade the 25-year-old Cienfuegos, Cuba native and informed him that if they were unable to do so, they were going to option him to the minor leagues once they acquired another outfielder in hopes of trading the oft controversial outfielder before the August 31 waiver trade deadline.
In his 12 games (eight starts) with the Dodgers this season, the 26-year-old Stripling posted a 2-3 record and 4.14 ERA. The Bluebell, Pennsylvania native has had two stints with the big league club thus far this season and figures to be a September call-up when rosters expand on September 1.
It is going to be interesting how this Puig drama plays out.
