Down on the Farm – Some nights are like that

In checking out the minor league games for the Dodgers eight minor league affiliates on Friday, July 15, a familiar pattern quickly became apparent. That is, it was a good night for starting pitchers, except in Tulsa where the Drillers game was rained out for a second consecutive night.

In Oklahoma City the Dodgers came away with a 9-3 win over the Reno Aces Friday night at Greater Nevada Field. Right-hander Jose De Leon started for the Dodgers and allowed two runs and five hits with three walks while working into the sixth inning. De Leon held the Aces to 2-for-10 with runners on base, including 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. He threw a season-high 102 pitches with 59 of them strikes.

In Rancho Cucamonga, where first baseman Edwin Rios continued to light up the evening sky with home runs, right-hander Grant Holmes went the first five innings allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked two in the Quakes 6-1 romp over the Inland Empire 66ers. Rios had his third two-homer game in his last six games.

The Great Lakes Loons fell 9-3 to the Burlington Bees. The highlight of the night was the debut of Dodgers second round selection in the 2016 First Year Player Draft. Right-hander Mitchell White pitched his scheduled two innings – almost flawlessly- allowing one hit while striking out one and issuing no free passes. He threw 32 pitches – 19 of them for strikes.

The Ogden Raptors completed a three-game sweep of the Missoula Osprey by way of a 5-2 victory on Friday night at Lindquist Field in Ogden. On Thursday, July 14 the Dodgers signed right-hander Josh Kimborowicz as a minor league free agent. In his Raptors debut on Friday night – through six innings – Kimborowicz racked up eight strikeouts and allowed only two runs on seven hits. He first win in the Dodgers organization helped Ogden to a three-game sweep of Missoula. Kimborowicz owns a 2.96 career ERA and a WHIP of 1.12 in his three-year minor league career.

Right-hander Yadier Alvarez continued his stellar play with the Arizona League Dodgers as they defeated the AZL Reds 7-4. Alvarez gave up two runs in four innings of work while striking out 5 and walking one. On the season he has a 1.80 ERA over five starts while striking out 26 in 20 innings of work. He has walked 10.

The DSL Dodgers-1 downed the DSL Giants 6-3 on Friday. Right-hander Jose Chacin pitched five innings of three hit ball while striking out three and walking one. The 19-year-old from Ciudad Bolivar in Columbia has a 3-1 record on the season over seven starts with a 1.78 ERA. He has struck out 30 in 35 innings and walked seven.

The DSL Dodgers-2 also enjoyed a good day downing the DSL Marlins 6-3. Edwin Uceta, from Villa Los Almacigos in the Dominican Republic, started and pitched 4.2 innings giving up only three hits with no walks and striking out four. On the season – over eight innings – the 18-year-old right-hander has yet to give up a run and has struck out eight.

You might say it was a pitcher’s night down on the farm.

I just hope I get down to Rancho to interview Rios before he gets promoted to Double-A Tulsa … or to the Dodgers. lol!

I would agree that Rios is a candidate for promotion, but with Cody Bellinger at 1B that would necessitate Rios to move to third. I understand Cody does play OF at times (allowing Lars Anderson to get some ABs), but I am surmising that he is the heir apparent to AGon’s 1B, and not the OF.

I know Edwin has played third, but I do not know what kind of defensive 3B he is. Have you watched him play 3B in Rancho? Can he be a viable 3B prospect?

      • Ron Cervenka says:

I saw him once (so far), on June 12 at Lake Elsinore. He played 3B and went 3 for 4 with two doubles and had two of the Quakes five RBIs. He also committed two of their three errors (one fielding and one throwing) in the eventual 5-2 win in Hyun-jin Ryu’s rehab start.

Ironically, he’s played 14 games at 3B and 14 games at 1B with the Quakes thus far. He’s made five errors at 3B and two at 1B, so it appears that he is better suited as a first baseman … for now, at least.
