The Dodgers have signed 18-year-old international free agent Ricky Hernandez, a 6′-3″ hard-throwing right-hander from Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.
Hernandez was signed through the Diablos Rojos of the Liga Mexicana, where he had been playing for Los Marineros de Ensenada.
“He has a big strong frame and hits the mid 90s on the [radar] gun,” said ThinkBlueLA staff writer Robb Anderson, who resides in Morelos. “He projects to add more velocity as he matures. He has a high ceiling with the big body, strong legs, and long arms. It is a good under-the-radar signing for the Dodgers.”
According to Anderson, Hernandez will begin his professional career at Campo Las Palmas, the Dodgers’ renowned baseball academy in the Dominican Republic and home of the DSL Dodgers.
“He is going first to the Dominican,” said Anderson.”But he could very well end up in Arizona before the end of the season, depending on his progress.”
There has been no official word of the signing from the Dodgers.
Under the radar signing. How cool is that?
#Scoop!
That’s cool too.
I played with Ricky in adult leagues when he was about 14-15 in Morelos. He threw in the 80s back then but with little control. I then saw him again a few years later accompanied by the Astros in the Liga Mexicana Academy AA All-Star game in El Carmen in 2014. He was hitting 90 with much better control and command. Since then he has added 4-5 mph to his fastball and I expect that to continue to rise as he matures. He is a real good kid and comes from a baseball family. Expect his younger brother to make news as well. He is a couple of years younger and currently in the academy with the Sultanes.
This is great stuff, Robb. Please keep us informed of any other golden nuggets (as Harold affectionately calls them) out there – especially future Dodgers.
Great report Robb. No pressure but I will now be watching Rickey as he progresses as well as your scouting skills. lol.
Is that the Canadian variation, Harold?
Yup – so Robb’s reputation is relatively safe.
