The Dodgers have recalled catcher / utility infielder Austin Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned left-hander Julio Urias back to OKC.
This will be Barnes’ third stint with the big league club after making the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster this season. The 26-year-old Riverside, California native hit safely in his last eight games for the OKC Dodgers and has a .299 batting average, .383 on-base percentage and .454 slugging percentage for an .837 OPS in 63 games with the Triple-A club. He also has 16 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 32 RBI.
Defensively, Barnes has played 46 games at catcher, 11 games at second base, eight games at third base and one game in center field with the OKC Dodgers. In his previous stints with the major league club this season he went 2 for 19 (.105) with one RBI while playing four games each at catcher and at second base.
Urias made his ninth start of the season on Thursday against the Washington Nationals, allowing only one run on five hits in 4.0 innings of work. On the season the Culiacan, Mexico native is 1-2 with a 4.69 ERA in nine major league starts.
I like Austin Barnes, but I think this is a showcase audition for a potential trade. I do not think that it is a coincidence that he is called up right before the Dodgers play Tampa Bay, who desperately need a catcher. You would assume that Texas and Cleveland will be checking on him, and the Mariners certainly need catching, but I do not see them making any moves. They would wait until the off-season to look.
I hope Austin gets a chance to prove himself, and if he cannot stay with LA, I hope he finds another home.
