There has been a lot of discussion as to whether or not the absolutely incredible throw by Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig to nail Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story at third base on Friday night was the greatest throw in MLB history. While this is certainly subject to debate – especially for many veteran (old) baseball fans – it most certainly ranks way up there.
For those who may have missed it, although I can’t possibly imagine how, here it is:
But the greatest throw in the 147-year history of the MLB?
“I think it was my best throw. I don’t know if it’s the best play. It’s up to you guys,” Puig told reporters after the game, who affirmed that it was. “That came from you guys. You guys are going to write it. I didn’t say that.”
Wait… what? A humble Yasiel Puig? Whoda thunk it? But the 25-year-old oft controversial Cienfuegos, Cuba native was finished with his humility just yet.
“If I can’t do it with my bat and I can’t do it with my glove, I’ll do it with my arm,” Puig said. “I have to do something to help my team. I just try to throw to the base and my teammates do the rest.”
According to MLB.com’s Statcast, Puig’s throw was estimated at 310 feet – that’s longer than goalpost to goalpost on a football field. And when you consider that Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner barely had to move his glove to catch Puig’s throw and tag out the sliding Story, it certainly supports the argument that it may indeed have been the greatest throw ever.
But as they say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
Jaw dropping, wasn’t it? One of the best I’ve ever seen, if not the best!
Oh… and Justin Turner’s glove-work (did he even have time to react???) was just as glorious!
BTW… 310 feet is slightly longer than goal-line to goal-line on a football field. People easily forget the end-zones are 10 yards deep which makes the football field 360 feet long or 120 yards.
BTW #2…
I gotta say that after listening to the TV and Radio calls from both teams on this spectacular play… and as good as Puig’s throw was… Joe Davis absolutely NAILED the call with, “…Story can fly! Puig can throw! MY GOODNESS!! YASIEL PUIG, FROM THE WALL!!” Then he drew a card out of Vin Scully’s deck… and shut his mouth for over 15 seconds.
The only thing that might’ve made this call better is if Vinny had a shot at it. But now Davis gets to own that call and, IMO, he handled it perfectly. Way to go, Joe!
If it wasn’t the greatest throw it sure was close to it.
