The Dodgers marketing and PR teams have hit another home run with Dodger fans for the upcoming 2016 season. It started in 2014 when they decided to honor the no-hitters thrown by Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw and former World Series champion Josh Becket with commemorative pins that instantly became huge collectors items.
And then last season the Dodgers gave away pins honoring their MLB-record 12 former Cy Young award winners (eight pins total), which proved to be equally popular – especially the Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Clayton Kershaw pins.
Not to be outdone in 2016, the Dodgers have announced that they will be giving away pins commemorating all 10 of their retired numbers, nine of whom are enshrined in the sacred Halls of Cooperstown.
“I love the pin giveaways, I put them on my hat,” said lifelong Dodger fan Tim Cervenka of Long Beach. “The only problem is, there are so many now that there’s no more room on my hat for them. They’re also kind of painful when the backs fall off and the pins stick you,” added Cervenka with a chuckle.
The Retired Number Pin giveaway schedule is as follows:
- May 9 – Pee Wee Reese #1
- June 4 – Don Sutton #20
- July 5 – Roy Campanella #39
- July 7 – Walter Alston #24
- July 31 – Jim Gilliam #19
- August 8 – Jackie Robinson #42
- Sept. 4 – Sandy Koufax #32
- Sept. 7 – Don Drysdale #53
- Sept. 22 – Tommy Lasorda #2 (on his 89th birthday)
Although Dodger fans might be able to pick up tickets on game day, there’s a pretty good chance that they, like the bobblehead nights, will be sellouts. As such, the best way to guarantee yourself the full set of the 10 pins (and all 10 Dodgers bobbleheads) is to purchase a 21-game mini-plan online via the Dodgers website or by calling the Dodger Stadium ticket office at 866-DODGERS.
Don’t miss out on these or any of the other great Dodgers promotional items this season.
GO DODGERS!
For us displaced Dodger fans, it would be nice if they had stuff like these pins on sale on the web site. I haven’t been to California since ’02 and don’t know when or if I’ll be back. It’s kinda hard to get to a game when one is 1000 miles away.
Last time I had a chance to go to Dodger Stadium, I don’t remember now what year it was, Dodgers were on the road ’til just before I was leaving. I only had a chance to get to one game. Good thing this was Dodger Stadium, where it doesn’t rain. Uh, game got rained out.
I catch all the games on mlb.com now.
Jeez – only 17 rainouts in DS history and you found one.
You can often find those pins – and just about every other DS giveaway – on eBay, sometimes for a steal.
And 1,000 is nothing. Bluenose is in Nova Scotia and Gail Johnson in New Brunswick.
