Dodgers make third round of spring training cuts

With Opening Day exactly two weeks from today, the Dodgers continued to trim their major league spring training roster, announcing four more cuts following Monday’s 6-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners at Camelback Ranch.

Being reassigned to minor league camp are first baseman Cody Bellinger, utility infielder Brandon Hicks, outfielder Corey Brown and catcher Shawn Zarraga – all of whom were non-roster invitees to big league camp.

Though there are no real surprises with this latest round of cuts, it’s hard not to be disappointed that 20-year-old Cody Bellinger was sent down, even though we all knew it was inevitable. But with veteran Adrian Gonzalez having a lock on the starting job at first base and Scott Van Slyke or Chase Utley his probable backups, there was simply no room for the Chandler, Arizona native on the roster, not to mention the fact that he absolutely needs to play every day.

Those who have been following Bellinger closely during his brief two-year minor league career since being selected by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2013 draft weren’t the least bit surprised with what he did in the 16 major league spring training games in which he appeared. But for those who haven’t, he absolutely opened a lot of eyes this spring. He leaves big league camp having gone 10 for 24 (.417) with two doubles, one home run and three RBIs. On defense Bellinger was flawless, with zero errors in 80 total chances in the 81 total innings that he played – all but two of them at first base.

Like Bellinger, Zarraga also had a huge major league spring training camp, but also like Bellinger there is simply no room for him on the major league roster with Yasmani Grandal, A.J. Ellis and Austin Barnes ahead of him on the Dodgers catching depth chart. In his 10 major league spring training games, Zarraga was 10 for 19 (.526) at the plate with one double and one RBI and perfect on defense in 10 total chances.

Although Brown was perfect on defense in the 13 games in which he played in the outfield, he was only 6 for 24 (.250) at the plate. As for Hicks, he had a spring he’d rather forget, going 4 for 20 (.200) at the plate and committing two errors in 10 total chances (.800 FPCT) at shortstop.

This latest round of cuts now leaves 41 players in major league camp (including seven non-roster invitees) – 21 pitchers and 20 position players. That being said, the Dodgers still have not placed Brett Anderson, Hyun-jin Ryu or Josh Ravin on the disabled list (but they will) and then must make 13 additional cuts before Opening Day to get to their final 25-man roster.

Stay tuned…

No surprises and if everyone is healthy the only intrigue will be: Crawford and/or Guerrero on the bench; 5th starter Frias, Lee, or Stripling; last RH BP spot between Frias (if not starting), Baez, or Garcia; and possibly a LH BP arm in place of Avilan (Liberatore or Thomas?)

Re: those BP arms. Y’think they all came to Camelback believing they had a lock on their jobs?
