It was being widely reported on Thursday night that the Dodgers have signed right-handed reliever Louis Coleman to a major league contract. Although the deal has not yet been confirmed by the Dodgers, Coleman posted this on Twitter late Thursday evening.
Coleman was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 5th round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Louisiana State University. The soon-to-be 30-year-old (on April 4) Greenwood, Mississippi native made his MLB debut on April 21, 2011 and spent parts of five seasons with the big league club. And although he spent most of the 2015 season at Triple-A Omaha, he appeared in four games with the defending World Series champs in 2015, posting a 1-0 record without allowing an earned run in 3.0 innings of work.
Through his five seasons in the big leagues, Coleman has a career mark of 6-4 with an excellent ERA of 3.20. He has appeared in a total of 152 games and has thrown 177.1 innings, during which he walked 78 and struck out 186 for a very good K/BB ratio of 2.38 and a K/9 rate of 9.4. With the Storm Chasers in 2015 Coleman was 8-2 with an outstanding 1.69 ERA in 64.0 innings of work, with 23 walks and 63 strikeouts.
Coleman signed a one-year – $700,000 contract with the Royals on January 15 to avoid arbitration but was released by the team on February 3, 2016. Per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, his deal with the Dodgers is a one-year major league contract worth $750,000 in 2016.
Pending an official announcement, the Dodgers will have to clear a spot on their 40-man roster to make room for Coleman. But with right-hander Brandon McCarthy still several months away in his return from Tommy John surgery, it is believed that he will be transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Coleman.
Strange signing. ML contract to a player with no remaining minor league options and an abundance of RH BP arms. Just a matter of time before Dodgers try to slide him through waivers (toward end of ST likely when other rosters are full?) and outright him to AAA. Montas is another possibility to the 60 day DL.
Maybe he, of somebody he can replace, will be part of a planned trade. Let’s see, Kershaw for ??????
Maybe not.
