The Dodgers have signed free-agent right-hander Brandon Beachy to a one-year contract reportedly worth a guaranteed $1.5 million with a number of performance incentives. The signing was first reported by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports via Twitter on Wednesday morning and confirmed by the Dodgers shortly thereafter.
Beachy was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves as a non-drafted free agent on July 22, 2008 out of Indiana Wesleyan University. Through six major league seasons – five with the Braves and one with the Dodgers – the 29-year-old Kokomo, Indiana native has a career mark of 14-12 with a 3.36 ERA. He missed significant action due to two Tommy John surgeries, the first on June 21, 2012 and the second on March 21, 2014. In his 275.2 innings of work in the big leagues, Beachy limited opposing hitters to a .223 batting average with a 1.16 WHIP while posting a 3.04 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 280 strike outs and only 92 walks.
Beachy signed a one-year contract with the Dodgers last spring but spent nearly the entire season on the disabled list recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. He eventually worked his way back to the big leagues where he went 0-1 with 7.88 ERA in two starts. Although the soft-spoken right-hander was extremely conservative in return to the big leagues, it appeared that perhaps he needed more time to fully recover and was sent back down to the minors to finish out the 2015 season.
After posting a minor league record of 1-1 with a 3.51 ERA while limiting opposing hitters to a .229 batting average in 11 minor league games (10 starts), Beachy became a free agent at the conclusion of the season until being re-signed by the Dodgers on Wednesday morning. His signing includes an invitation to major league camp this spring.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Beachy, the Dodgers designated left-hander Tyler Olson for assignment. The Dodgers acquired Olson from the Seattle Mariners on December 18.
