Dodgers sign free agent left-hander Scott Kazmir

The Dodgers announced that they have signed free agent left-hander Scott Kazmir to a three-year / $48 million contract.

The 31-year-old Houston, Texas native has a 98-90 career record with a 3.96 ERA in 272 games (271 starts) through 11 major league seasons – all in the American League – with the Rays (2004-09), Angels (2009-11), Indians (2013), Athletics (2014-15) and Astros (2015). The three-time All-Star (2006, 2008, 2014) has posted double-digit victories in seven of his 11 MLB seasons and has averaged of nearly one strikeout per inning pitched during the course of his career with 1,474 Ks in 1,553.1 innings, including a career-high and AL-best 239 strikeouts in 2007 with Tampa Bay.

In 2015 with Oakland and Houston, Kazmir combined for a 7-11 record with a 3.10 ERA in 31 starts, ranking among the AL’s best in ERA (4th), opponents’ batting average (.237, 15th) and WHIP (1.21, 15th). He produced a 43.4 ground ball percentage and forced an average of 0.84 double plays per 9.0 innings, the eighth best in the AL.

Kazmir was originally selected by the Mets in the first round (15th overall pick) in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft out of Cypress Falls High School in Houston. He was subsequently acquired by the Rays on July 30, 2004 and made his big league debut on Aug. 23, 2004.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated outfielder Daniel Fields for assignment.

Aside from the fact that having an all lefty starting rotation feels a little uncomfortable to me, since it’s rare. If it stays this way, I hope it’s successful. I understand he has a good change up, that should help.
I hope it’s a good sign that this signing seems to be a bit quiet. Not much of a fuss is being made of it.

Kazmir looks like a solid #3 starter. If they had non-tendered Anderson and signed Cueto I would applaud the move but as it is it seems like too little too late. Maybe a trade is coming involving Wood and we will get one of those #2 starters after all.

Actually, the Dodgers couldn’t non-tender Brett Anderson. His one-year contract with the Dodgers entitled him to a qualifying offer which, of course, he accepted. His one-year / $15.8 million contract extension is actually a pretty good deal for both he and the Dodgers. That being said, he is most certainly trade-eligible, although I don’t really see that happening.

Lost in the Kazmir fray is the fact that the Dodgers are still the lead dog in the Kenta Maeda sweepstakes. Should they in fact land Maeda, he (and his suddenly extremely valuable right arm) immediately becomes the Dodgers’ number two starter – and that would be a very good thing (IMHO).
