Dodgers’ other broadcaster set to return in 2016

Longtime Dodgers employee and former MLB manager Kevin Kennedy will be returning to the AM 570 LA Sports radio broadcast booth on a part time basis for the 2016 season.

The former Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers manager, who also managed in the Dodgers minor league system for eight seasons, said on Saturday that he will return in a similar capacity as last season; that is, working alongside veteran broadcaster and former Dodger Rick Monday when Charlie Steiner does the play-by-play calling on television and when Steiner or Monday are on vacation.

Although some may call Kennedy’s role in 2015 a part time gig it was actually anything but, with the 61-year-old Los Angeles native doing a total of 91 games on AM 570 LA Sports – the Dodgers flagship radio station. In fact, Kennedy worked nearly every road game last season except for the handful of games that Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully did in San Francisco. That being said, Kennedy will likely do fewer radio games in 2016 than last season with the recent hiring of 27-year-old Joe Davis, who will handle the bulk of the play-by-play calling on SportsNet LA when the Dodgers are on the road, thereby keeping Steiner in the radio booth. Many peg Davis as the heir-apparent for Vin Scully when the legendary broadcaster retires at the conclusion of the 2016 season.

“I will definitely get the radio games when Joe Davis doesn’t do the television games and Charlie fills in for him,” Kennedy said. “I’ll also do any other games that Vin doesn’t do next season. I won’t have an exact number until we finalize the contract in December, but I’m going to be doing plenty of games next season.”

In addition to his substitute role on Dodgers’ radio broadcasts, Kennedy has also co-hosted the ever-popular Dodger Talk post-game radio show with David Vassegh for the past two seasons. He said that plans have not yet been finalized for next season’s Dodger Talk.

“We haven’t discussed Dodger Talk for next season yet,” said Kennedy. “They’ll work on that next.”
