What do Yasmani Grandal, Nathan Eovaldi, Buster Posey, Chase Headley, Billy Hamilton, Sean Doolittle, Pablo Sandoval, Peter Bourjos, Wade LeBlanc and more recently Carlos Correa and Corey Seager have in common? They all represented the California League in the prestigious California League versus Carolina League All-Star Game.
The annual event showcases the very best that each league has to offer and for the first time 12 years it will be held at beautiful LoanMart Field – home of the Dodgers Advanced Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes – on Tuesday, June 23.
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring the All-Star Game back to Rancho Cucamonga for the first time since 2003,” said Quakes general manager Grant Riddle. “Over the past four seasons, LoanMart Field has seen a few major renovations, which makes us equally excited to showcase the ballpark as well as the city of Rancho Cucamonga and all it has to offer.”
Representing the Quakes at this year’s event will be 19-year-old phenom first baseman Cody Bellinger and star second baseman Brandon Trinkwon. Top Dodgers pitching prospect Jose De Leon and his battery mate Kyle Farmer were also named to the Cal League team but both were recently promoted to the Dodgers Double-A Tulsa Drillers and will miss the game.
Honorary managers for the 2015 California League – Carolina League All-Star Game will be Dodgers great and 1981 World Series co-MVP Ron Cey for the Cal League and Hall of Famer George Brett for the Carolina League.
Festivities begin at 5:30 pm (PT) with the U.S. Bank Home Run Derby in which Bellinger will participate. Captain of the Cal League’s HRD team is none other than former Dodgers slugger Shawn Green. Carolina’s HRD team will be guided by former Angel and Dodger Adam Kennedy.
This year’s Home Run Derby will also feature a “Pros vs. Joes” segment in which fans will have an opportunity to participate. Fans wishing to participate as a “Joe” are reminded that this is a first-come, first-served opportunity, with registration starting at 2:30 pm and the derby getting underway at 3:00 pm on Softball Field 3, which is adjacent to LoanMart Field. Participants must make a $5 donation to the Inland Empire United Way and also have a ticket to the game in order to qualify for the derby.
A pre-game Fan Fest event, presented by the Inland Empire California Sports & Entertainment Commission, kicks off the festivities at LoanMart Field at 3:30 pm. Fans will have an opportunity to attend two designated autograph sessions and have their photograph taken with the Dodgers 1988 World Series Trophy. They will also be able to watch both teams take pre-game batting practice. Additionally, fans will have an opportunity to bid on game-worn jerseys from the event and visit the Quakes team store to purchase 2015 All-Star Game merchandise. Kids are invited to play in the Dave & Buster’s Fun Zone and adult kids can enjoy a one-hour Happy Hour with $3 domestic drafts, $4 premium drafts or $2 Pepsi products.
There are still a limited number of ticket remaining for Tuesday’s 2015 California League – Carolina League All-Star Game. Tickets can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
I will be there and participating in the HR Derby.
Get there early, Garrett – and good luck!
Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment and can’t make it.
