‘If you have a sombrero, throw it to the sky!’

Twenty-five years ago tonight, Dodgers great Fernando Valenzuela threw a no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium.

Former Dodger Pedro Guerrero grounded into game-ending 1-4-3 double play to complete the no-hitter. Ironically, had Fernando not deflected Guerrero’s ground ball, it probably would have been a base hit up the middle. But instead, the slight deflection allowed Dodgers second baseman Juan Samuel to field the ball, step on second base to force out Cardinals center fielder Willie McGee and throw to Dodgers first baseman Eddie Murray to double-up Guerrero.

Immediately after the play, Dodgers Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully said the immortal words “If you have a sombrero, throw it to the sky!”

A great moment in Dodgers history indeed.
