‘How bout that Gonzalez homer?’

It’s probably one of the most played commercials during and after Dodgers radio broadcasts on AM 570 LA Sports – the Security Benefits commercial where the kid says to his grandfather “How bout that Gonzalez homer?” to which the grandfather answers “Unbelievable!. This exchange is followed by the kid saying “Wow! A shutout!” to which grandpa says “Kershaw was lights out!”

For the first time this season, both of these things actually occurred in the same game in Tuesday night’s 8-0 shutout of the Atlanta Braves in front of 40,667 at Dodger Stadium.

Not only did the Dodgers first baseman hit an opposite field home run into the Left Field Pavilion for his 10th of the season, but in doing so AGon picked up career RBIs number 1,000 and 1,001 to become one of only 12 active players to have accomplished this tremendous feat.

“A thousand obviously is an accomplishment, it means you’ve been in the league for a little while,” said Gonzalez after the game. “Just got to thank God for the opportunity to stay healthy and have the amount of at-bats so I could get there. It does definitely mean a lot. Career wise I’d like to see 1,500.”

As for Kershaw, he was indeed “lights out,” even though he did not pitch a complete game shut out; in fact, he lasted only 7 innings. But in those seven innings, he allowed no runs on only four hits while walking none and striking out 10.

According to our good friend Eric Stephen over at True Blue LA, it was the ninth time in his career that Kershaw has struck out at least 10 batters without issuing a walk and the first this season. He did it three times last season including his 14-strikeout / zero-walk no-hitter on June 18.

So the next time you hear the Security Benefits radio commercial – and you undoubtedly will – rather than being annoyed by it, simply smile to yourself and think about Tuesday night’s historic game when Gonzalez was “Unbelievable” and “Kershaw was lights out.”
