Dodgers announce Opening Day roster

As anticipated, the Dodgers announced their Opening Day 25-man roster following Saturday night’s Freeway Series and spring training finale which ended in a 6-6 tie – the eighth of the spring for the Dodgers.

While there were no major surprises in Dodgers President of Baseball Operation Andrew Friedman’s announcement, which came during Dodger manager Don Mattingly’s post-game media briefing on Saturday, there were a couple on minor ones.

Although the fact that Yimi Garcia, Pedro Baez Paco Rodriguez and Darwin Barney made the cut undoubtedly caught some prognosticators off guard a little, their making the team proved that Friedman, Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi and Mattingly did indeed walk the walk by taking most of the best 25 guys.

Although super-sub utility infielder/outfielder Kike Hernandez will begin the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City, he figures to end up with the big league team should any of the Dodger regulars suffer any type of prolonged injury. Hernandez homered in Saturday night’s spring training finale giving him six on the spring, tying him for the team lead with Joc Pederson. Although Hernandez was visibly disappointed that he did not make the Opening Day roster, he made it very clear that he will continue to work extremely hard to get back up with the team as soon as possible.

Pleased with most of this announcement, but disappointed that someone as versatile as Hernandez needs to be sent to Triple A because of Guerrero’s contract. Let’s see how long it’ll be until he returns – hopefully not long. But yay for Paco!

  2. Bluenose Dodger says:

Very pleased to see Garcia, Rodriguez and Baez make the team. That is the sign we were waiting for. Now they have to really work to keep the spot.

Gail I think Guerrero earned a spot with his bat. I also think we will see Hernandez in the not too distant future.

I wonder if Guerrero (2B) might be a trade candidate with the Angels? Maybe Andre and Alex to the Angels with the Dodgers subsidizing the deal for Andre. It looks like Guerrero’s bat is real and his glove seemed to improve.

When I watched Kike Hernandez hit that game tying home run last night I thought I was watching a home run hit by one of the players that made the team. As usual I was wrong, but none the less, it did come as a surprise that he didn’t.
I would assume that the 8 spring training game ties is an all time Dodger record until someone informs me otherwise.
