I can almost hear Dodgers manager Don Mattingly now: O’Koyea Dickson is having a great spring but spring training doesn’t really mean anything – or words to that effect.
Sound familiar?
Kind of sounds like spring training 2013 when Dodgers sensation Yasiel Puig hit .517 with five doubles, two triples, three home runs and 11 RBIs but was deemed “too raw” and relegated to begin the season at Double-A Chattanooga. Finally, on June 3, 2013, after hitting .313 with 12 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 37 RBI in 40 games with the Lookouts, Puig was called up to the big leagues and went absolutely crazy against major league pitching.
Could it be déjà vu all over again with Dickson – a 25-year-old minor league first baseman and outfielder?
Through three spring training games, Dickson has yet to hit a single. He does, however, have a double and two home runs – good for three RBIs and a .500 batting average. Last year at Double-A Chattanooga, the San Francisco, CA native hit .269 with 17 home runs (tied for fifth most in the Southern League), 36 doubles (second), three triples, and 73 RBIs (fourth).
Oh sure, three games is a very small sample size and Dickson will most likely cool off at some point. But then again, that’s what Mattingly said would happen to Puig – only he didn’t. And the way Dickson is crushing the ball to all fields, it might not happen with him either.
Realistically, there is simply no place to fit Dickson into the Dodgers Opening Day roster and he will undoubtedly begin the 2015 season at Triple-A Oklahoma City. But it would certainly behoove Andrew Friedman, Farhan Zaidi, Josh Byrnes and Gabe Kapler to keep a very close eye on Dickson in the event of an injury or if one of the Dodger regulars struggle along the way.
He, Pederson, Guerrero and others are starting off like a house on fire. They’re creaming the ball in BP as well, and the coaches are obviously excited by what they see. I hope the continues and that Donny and company will have a hard time cutting down to the final roster because everyone s doing well, not because of financial decisions.
No surprise here. I wrote this in May, 2012. “How long will O’Koyea Dickson be with the Loons? He is a hitting machine.”
O’Koyea is not flashy but a good competitor.
It seems he won’t get a first base job in LA for the foreseeable future. Although I would like for him to remain in the Dodger system I feel a trade to an American League where he can also DH would eventually be in his best interests.
Picked this up from an article by Eric Becker entitled ‘ O’Koyea Dickson Breaks Out”.
O’Koyea: “Lord give me patience to wait for the kind of promotion that comes from You. Help me to remember that I’m blessed for a reason. #Amen”
I saw Dickerson’s first homer and I like what I see and read of him. It’s hard to say yet but he looks good.
Ops, I meant Dickson.
