Internet Writers name five to Hall of Fame

Just two hours before the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) is scheduled to reveal their selection(s) for the National Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2015, the off-shoot Internet Baseball Writers Association of America (IBWAA) has named five players to their unofficial but highly regarded Hall of Fame.

It should come as no surprise that soon-to-be BBWAA Hall of Famers Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez topped the IBWAA voting with 98.24% and 95.15% respectively of the 227 ballots cast by the more than 300 IBWAA members. The burning question of course is – how could anyone not vote for these two guys?

Coming in third in the IBWAA Hall of Fame voting was John Smoltz with 82.82%, thus putting an exclamation point on the age-old fact that good pitching (or great pitching in this case) trumps good hitting – even when it comes to the Hall of Fame.

Round out the top five candidates who received the 75% required to achieve HOF status were Jeff Bagwell with 81.94% and Tim Raines with 75.30%.

Just missing the cut was Curt Schilling with 65.64%.

In a sign of the times that internet writers are easing their once strong stance against confirmed or suspected PED users, Roger Clemons finished seventh in the voting with 64.76% and Barry Bonds in 10th place with 63.44%. And while it makes no difference if you miss the cut even by .01%, this strong showing by Clemons and Bonds tends to suggest that the next generation of internet writers are a bit more forgiving that many of the old-school guys. It is believed that this trend will carry over into the BBWAA Hall of Fame voting as well.

To help eliminate any confusion, the IBWAA voted Mike Piazza into their Hall of Fame in 2013 (the year that the BBWAA voted in no one) and voted in Craig Biggio last year – hence their names do not appear on the IBWAA voting results. Neither Piazza nor Biggio have been elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the BBWAA, although this may change within the next hour when the BBWAA Hall of Fame Class of 2015 is officially announced at 11 a.m. PT.

In contrast, the BBWAA voted Barry Larkin into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012 whereas the IBWAA has yet to induct Larkin.
