Numerous sources are reporting that the Kemp deal has gone through with no additional moneys added to the original agreement.
The absolute worst fears of Dodgers new President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and new general manager Farhan Zaidi were realized on Thursday morning when it was reported that the trade of Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp to the San Diego Padres has been put on hold after his physical revealed arthritis in both hips.
Although there has been no official word from either club yet, this news will undoubted create a landslide of problems for not only the Dodgers and Padres but also for the Philadelphia Phillies, who were to receive right-hand Zach Eflin from the Dodgers in exchange for veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins. The deal would have also sent Dodgers back-up catcher Tim Federowicz to San Diego.
While there is still the possibility that the trade could go through, the conditions of the trade would undoubtedly have to be reworked – more specifically, a much larger portion of Kemp’s remaining $107 million contract would have to be eaten by the Dodgers. In the initial deal with San Diego, the Dodgers would have sent a reported $32 million to the Padres – a move that would have absolved the Dodgers of $75 million of Kemp’s original eight-year / $160 deal which took effect in 2012.
We will continue to follow this breaking story and provide additional information as it becomes available.
