Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has said it time and again. “Adrian [Gonzalez] is our most consistent guy day in and day out,” and the numbers back this up.

In his second full-season with the Dodgers, Gonzalez is within 17 points of his career .292 batting average, is within five home runs of his 23 per season career home run average, is four RBIs above his 85 per season career RBI average and is .001 above his .995 career fielding percentage.

Yes, AGon is indeed a model of consistency, and it is this consistency that will (most likely) lead the 2014 Dodgers into the postseason and perhaps even to a World Championship.

But Gonzalez’s season hasn’t been without its struggles. Through May and June AGon went through a prolonged slump that saw his batting average drop from a season high .337 to a season low .222 and, at one point, he went 114 plate appearances between home runs. But since the All-Star break Gonzalez is hitting .344 (43 for 125) with four home runs, 14 doubles and 29 RBIs, and has seen his average climb back up to .275 with every indication that it will continue to rise. In fact, in his last 10 games AGon has had three multi-hit games and is 12 for 35 (.343) with one home run, four doubles and nine RBIs. Heading into Monday’s off day Gonzalez has 89 RBIs on the season – second in the National League to only Giancarlo Stanton’s 94.

On the other side of the ball AGon has committed only 5 errors in 1,183 total chances for an outstanding .996 FPCT – fourth best in all of baseball and second in the NL to only Justin Morneau’s .997 FPCT (3 errors in 1,031 total chances).

If there is one knock on Gonzalez it’s that he strikes out 17.2% of the time. His 92 strikeouts thus far are third-most on the team behind only Matt Kemp (118) and Yasiel Puig (97). That being said, AGon’s batting average with runners in scoring position is an excellent .327 and with a runner on third base an alien-like .571 (9 for 14). In other words, there is no better Dodger to have at the plate with runners on base than Adrian Gonzalez.

As the Dodgers head into the final month of the season it is reassuring for Dodger fans to know that Gonzalez continues to be the Dodgers “most consistent guy.”

Now, if only the rest of the Dodgers would start showing a little of AGon’s consistency.
