Dodgers top pitching prospect Julio Urias suffers minor groin strain but still a ‘Go’ for Futures Game

ThinkBlueLA has learned that 17-year-old top pitching prospect Julio Urias suffered what is being described as a “very minor” groin strain during his July 4 start against the JetHawks at The Hangar in Lancaster.

Sources say that the injury will most likely only cause Urias to miss his next scheduled start on Wednesday, July 9 against the Lake Elsinore Storm at LoanMart Field but he is expected to be fully recovered and available for the 2014 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which is set for Sunday, July 13 at Target Field in Minnesota during MLB’s All-Star Week.

The hard-throwing left-hander is 1-1 on the season with the Dodgers Advanced Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes with an impressive 3.51 ERA. His win-loss record is misleading, however, because the Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico native is on a very strict innings limit dictated by Dodgers Vice President of Player Development DeJon Watson and he rarely goes the requisite five innings to be eligible for a win.

In his 51.1 innings thus far with the Quakes, Urias has struck out 55 and walked 24. He was removed from Friday night’s game after pitching only 1.2 innings in which he allowed one run on one hit while striking our three and walking one.

Watson currently has Urias on a rotating three-inning and then five-inning schedule, which is not expected to change.

If there is even the slightest chance he could aggravate the injury by pitching in Minneapolis, the Dodgers should INSIST he not go!!!
