The greatest baseball moment of the season

Some may argue that Clayton Kershaw’s incredible no-hitter on June 18, 2014 was the greatest baseball moment of the season. Still others may argue that it was Yasiel Puig’s impossible diving catch on May 22, 2014 at Citi Field in New York. While both of these remarkable feats were indeed great Dodger moments this season, they both pale in comparison to what happened before Tuesday night’s game between the Dodgers and Royals at Kauffman Field in Kansas City.

The Royals had invited young Royals fan Austin Sides, who was celebrating his 11th birthday, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. What Austin didn’t know was that the Royals had also invited Austin’s father, U.S. Air Force Major Robert Sides who had just returned from deployment in the Middle East, to catch Austin’s pitch.

Dressed in a Royals uniform complete with full catching gear, the elder Sides caught Austin’s pitch and began walking to the mound to hand the ball to the boy. As he did so, he took off his catcher’s mask and the jig was up.

In an overwhelming emotional moment, young Austin embraced his father and broke into tears – as did everyone else at Kauffman Stadium and anyone who has seen this video of the moment.

Well done, Royals. Well done indeed.

A moment in time that can never be replicated. Good for the Royals.

I saw it on MLB Extra innings as I watched the Royals broadcast. I also saw this done earlier this year with another father and son. It’s really heart warming.
