There was absolutely zero doubt that Juan Uribe blew out his hamstring when he doubled in the top of the 9th inning of Tuesday night’s 9-4 win over the Mets at Citi Field. Not only was Uribe waving towards the Dodgers dugout immediately upon arriving at second base but so, too, was Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores. When Uribe was walking off the field after being replaced by utility infielder Justin Turner, he was limping noticeably.
“Right now, it’s not feeling good,” Uribe told reporters after the game. “It feels really bad now. I’ll wait for tomorrow, but it feels [worse] than last time. I felt it going to first base and felt it pull a little bit more. Oh, yeah, it’s worse.”
But while Uribe’s injury was getting all of the attention from the media and broadcasters covering the game, there was another Dodger player who appeared to have suffered some type of leg injury and his loss would be absolutely devastating to the team. Yes, it is Yasiel Puig.
It happened in the top of the 8th inning after Puig was hit by a pitch. On a 3-1 fastball from Mets reliever Daisuke Matsuzaka to Hanley Ramirez, Puig broke for second base on a steal attempt but Matsuzaka’s pitch was low for ball four. Puig did not slide and in fact let up as he reached second base after apparently being told by second base umpire Angel Hernandez that it was ball four. Puig slowed and walked over the bag, taking approximately four or five additional steps and appeared to be limping ever so slightly.
After a pitching change, Mets reliever Scott Rice uncorked a wild pitch and Puig ran to third base – again appearing to be limping slightly. Puig was left stranded at third and was the last player to take the field for the bottom half of the 8th. Speculation is that he had whatever was bothering him (possibly a hamstring or a calf) wrapped, which might account for his extra time in taking the field.
Puig batted again in the top of the 9th inning and hit an RBI single to center field that allowed him to take it a bit easy running to first base. He then returned to the field for in the bottom of the 9th, which ended without him having to make a play.
Please understand that this is all speculation, as there was no mention of a Puig injury after the game by Dodgers manager Don Mattingly; however, something did not look right and it is something that bears paying attention to.
@Think_BlueLA oh God please let the both of them be ok, we don’t need anymore DL Stints
The announcers on MLB.TV commented a number of times that Yasiel appeared to hurt himself going into second base.
It was a good win but a not so good day for the roster. Might be time for Hanley to move to 3B.
Well it’s good that Puig returned last night for the second game of this three game series.
