For the second time in as many days, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes squandered a remarkable comeback in the bottom of the 9th inning at Stater Brothers Stadium in Adelanto against the hometown High Desert Mavericks. On Tuesday night the Quakes gave away a 6-5 lead only to lose 7-6 in the final frame and last night it was a 14-11 lead in which the Mavericks tied it up in their half of the 9th – but that’s only the half of it.
In a game that went 13 innings and lasted five hours and eight minutes, the Quakes exploded for 4 runs in the top of the inning, an inning that included the ejection of several Mavs players. But even then the Mavs managed to score two in the bottom of the 13th inning and had the tying run at the plate in the form of Guillermo Pimentel, who had gone 1 for 5 on the night but who sent Quakes left fielder Noel Cuevas to the wall on a deep fly ball that Cuevas caught for the final out of the game to give the Quakes the 18-16 win.
It would take an hour or more to detail all that went on in what is arguably the craziest game of the season for the Quakes and rather than doing so, a review of the game re-cap from the Quakes official website will explain how the game unfolded and eventually ended; a game that saw a total of 34 runs, 41 hits, 6 errors and 16 pitchers used.
Quakes right fielder Scott Schebler ultimately knocked in the winning run but there was so much that happened leading up to his game-winning hit that this win was truly a team effort and the result of some less than stellar play by the Mavericks in the final inning.
With the win, the Quakes remain one-half game back in the race for the final Wild Card spot in the Cal League South with only 12 games remaining.
The rubber game of the three-game series with the Mavs is tonight at Stater Brothers Stadium at 7:05 PM and you can pretty much count on it being yet another wild one.
