The 2013 Southern League All Star Game will be played at Bragan Field in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday, July 17. This will be the first time the Jacksonville Suns have hosted the game since 2003. At that time the Suns were a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate and were represented by two players familiar to Dodger fans – Joel Hanrahan and Edwin Jackson.
The Southern and Northern Division teams will square off in the Class AA game which has historically showcased some of the top prospects in minor league baseball. Jose Canseco, Robin Ventura, Evan Longoria and Josh Johnson are among major league players who have represented their teams in the Southern League All Star Game.
Players named to the all-star teams are selected by a vote of Southern League managers, radio broadcasters, general managers and print media.
The 2013 Southern League All Star Game will feature seven Chattanooga Lookouts, the Dodgers Class AA affiliate. They are:
Joc Pederson, 21, an 11th round selection in the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft was drafted out of Palo Alto High School in California. Joc has moved quickly through the Dodger farm system and has found further success at the Double A level. He ranks second in the league in each of the following statistical categories: 13 home runs, 59 runs scored, 25 stolen bases, .389 OBP. His .515 slugging percentage leads the league while his batting average of an even .300 ranks fourth in the league.
Zach Lee, 21, was the Dodgers 1st round (28th) selection of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft. He too was drafted out of high school, from McKinney High School in Texas. While his won-loss record is only 6-5 he has made significant gains with an ERA of 2.95 and a WHIP of 1.115. In 16 starts Zach has pitched 88.1 innings striking out 80 and walking 24. In his last outing he pitched seven scoreless innings of two hit ball.
Ross Stripling, 23, a favorite of mine and listed as a sleeper pick by John Sickles when drafted in 2012, is a surprise selection to the All-Star team. Ross was a 5th round selection in the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft. He was drafted out of Texas A&M University. He is a surprise selection to the All Star team simply because he has made only eight starts with the Lookouts following his six starts with the A+ Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. As a Lookout Ross has earned 5 wins to go along with a 2.34 ERA and 1.060 WHIP. His trade mark is his command. He has struck out 47 in 50 innings with the Lookouts and walked 6.
Yimi Garcia, 22, signed out of the Dominican Republic, has been with the Dodger organization for four years and has very quietly and efficiently moved through the ranks of the minor leagues. In 2013 he has 14 saves, an ERA of 3.13 and a WHIP of .084. Coming out of the bullpen in 37.1 innings he has Ross Stripling-like numbers with 48 strikeouts and 6 walks. His strikeout pitch is a slider ranked as one of the better ones in the Dodger organization.
Rafael Ynoa, 25, was signed out of the Dominican Republic and has been in the Dodger organization for eight years. He is a switch-hitting second baseman who has not put up exceptional numbers but is a very consistent player and a team leader. On the year he is batting .263 with 40 runs scored and an OBP of .338 with 13 stolen bases. In clutch situations with the Lookouts I am always pleased to have Ynoa come to the plate.
Hector Nelo, 26, has been a valuable member of the bullpen coming in to fight rallies left behind by starters who have tired. In that role he has a very respectable ERA of 2.27 ERA and a WHIP of 1.28. Hector has struck out 32 and walked 17 in 42.2 innings. Although I don’t have a statistic, in listening to Lookout games, I noted that Hector has a very good percentage in stranding inherited runners. He was taken by the Dodgers in the AAA phase of the Rule 5 draft from the Nationals in 2012. He was voted by Baseball America as having the best fastball in the Carolina League in 2011 and gets up to 96-100 MPH.
Luis Vasquez, 27, from San Pedro de Macoris, has been in the Dodger organization for seven years. Despite walking 22 in 24 innings he was named to the All-Star team, his 2.62 ERA and 32 strikeouts being All Star numbers. This is his second year with the Lookouts and his numbers are much improved over those of the 2012 season.
Rob Rasmussen, 24, was also selected as a Southern League All Star. He was acquired from Houston in the John Ely trade in December and was promoted to the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes after 12 games (11 starts) with the Lookouts. It was Rob’s 2.42 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 63.1 innings pitched while with the Lookouts that earned him his selection to the 2013 Southern League All-Star team and promotion. As a result of his promotion, he will not be attending the Southern League All Star game.
RT @Think_BlueLA: New post – Down on the Farm – Southern League All Stars includes 7 Lookouts
That is the largest number of players from one team to be selected to a MiLB All-Star Game in my memory, Harold; not that I’m complaining.
Since the Dodgers moved their Triple-A team back to the thin air of Albuquerque, it seems that they view their Double-A team as the best in their farm system and where most future MLB players will most likely come from (in my opinion).
Joc and Zach were no-brainers to make the team but it is great to see the others included – especially Rafael Ynoa, whose time clock is running out for a legitimate shot at making the Bigs.
Time is definitely running out for Rafael. There was no doubt in my mind last night that if someone was going to break up the no hitter it would be him. He does a whole lot of things so well – advance runners, runs the bases well, gets clutch hits, fields well, etc. It’s just that his bat is not quite as good as it needs to be at this stage of his career. He is Jerry Hairston at an AA level. I hope he makes it to AAA so he can earn a better salary for playing the game he loves.
Yimi Garcia might be next in line for a look-see with the Dodgers if an injury occurs in the pen.
Thanks for filling in the info on Rob Rasmussen. I got a bit lazy on that nearing bed time and Rob advanced to the Isotopes.
