With several sources reporting that the Biogenesis suspensions will be handed down later this week, baseball general managers are frantically trying to set up contingency plans in the event that the suspensions will affect their teams.
In spite of MLB’s and the MLBPA’s hopes that leaks would be avoided, they have not. As expected, topping the list of leaked names is that of troubled Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who is reportedly looking at a suspension for the remainder of the 2013 season and all of the 2014 season. If true, this suspension would far exceed the first offense 50-game suspension and the second offense 100-game suspensions combined, although the allegations against A-Rod will undoubtedly include other offenses – possibly including obstruction and tampering chargess.
Another prominent name being floated around is that of Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz. If true, the Rangers will be in desperate need of a corner outfield.
Adding to the problem is the fact that the July 31 trade deadline is only three days away, which is undoubtedly preventing teams from negotiating trades for fear that their targets may be on the Biogenesis list.
MLB has made it very clear that they did not want to take anything away from the All-Star Game and today’s Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, but one would suspect that they do not want to delay the pending suspension announcements beyond the trade deadline, This suggests that the announcements could come as early as Monday or Tuesday. If MLB follows the same time frame that they used in the Ryan Braun suspension, the announcements would most likely occur at 5 PM (ET).
On Sunday’s MLB Network Radio show Power Alley, co-host Jim Bowden said that he believes that the biggest names have already been leaked and that he doesn’t expect any earth-shattering revelations in that regard; however, Bowden was quick to add that there could be some suspensions for players such as middle relievers or set-up men on teams that are in contention, which could have a devastating effect on these teams heading into the stretch run.
Although there will undoubtedly be some surprises on the suspension list, there has been nothing to indicate that any Dodgers are involved in the Biogenesis case – but you just never know.
Stay tuned…
