I’ve made road trips before – to San Francisco, to Phoenix, to Denver, to San Diego, to New York, even to historic Fenway Park in Boston. Face it, I love the Dodgers and I love traveling to away ballparks, so it’s a perfect match. And while obnoxious, rude and disgustingly profane Giants fans have successfully eliminated AT&T Park from what was once a frequent destination for me, I thoroughly enjoy going to every other MLB ballpark.

To date, my favorite road trip was to the aforementioned Fenway Park, which I did with my daughter and a couple of dear friends of mine back in 2010 when the Dodgers played three interleague games against the Red Sox. We were part of a large group of around 125 Dodgers fans who had hooked up with a tour group called “Dodger Life” and it was a blast.

My daughter, who has lived in New York for the past four years is, as you might imagine, a huge Dodger fan and I visit her once a year. By sheer coincidence my visits always seem to coincide with the Dodger series against the Mets at Citi Field (okay I lied about that sheer coincidence thing). These trips are always fun and it never ceases to amaze me how many fellow Dodger fans are at these games, although not nearly as many as the away games at the NL West ballparks; after all, we are talking almost 2,800 miles away from Dodger Stadium.

That being said, you can imagine my utter shock when my daughter and I got off of the number 6 train at the main entrance to Yankee Stadium and saw hundred, perhaps even thousands of Dodger fans in and amongst the rain-soaked Yankee fans. It was absolutely amazing.

As you know by now, the game was postponed due to rain, which was extremely heavy at times. During the rain delay leading up to the eventual postponement, I met and chatted with dozens of Dodger fans; and while many of them were from New York (including several former Brooklyn Dodger fans), a surprisingly large number had actually made the trip from southern California for the brief two-game series against the Yankees. In fact, my daughter actually ran into a guy who she went to high school with in our home town of Santa Clarita, CA a decade ago who had flown in solely for this series.

Obviously, there were far more Yankee fans that Dodger fans patiently waiting for the game that would not be on this night, but by my guestimate I would put the number of Dodger fans (at least those wearing Dodger gear) at around 20-25% – which is pretty incredible when you think about it.

Whether or not these die-hard Dodger fans will return to Yankee Stadium for today’s day-night double header remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the Dodgers will be well supported and represented.
