Top right-handed Dodger pitching prospect Ross Stripling had the game of his young career on Sunday afternoon leading the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to a 4-1 win over the normally powerful San Jose Giants.
Stripling was overpowering in his 8 innings of work, the longest outing of any Quakes starter this season, allowing only 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking none. The lone Giants run came on a 5th inning solo home run by Giants first baseman Angel Villalona, his sixth of the season. Villalona’s home run was the first home run allowed by Stripling in his professional career, having pitched 66 total innings up to that point. The 23-year-old Southlake, Texas native threw a total of 89 pitches on the day earning his second win against no losses and lowered his ERA to 2.94. He has allowed 11 walks while striking out 34 on the season.
Quakes third baseman Casio Grider led the offense for Rancho going 2-4 with a walk and 2 RBIs. Both of Grider’s hits were triples.
Recent Quakes arrival Owen Jones picked up his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless 9th inning. Jones joins Michael Thomas (9) and Pedro Baez (1) as the only three Quakes pitchers to have earned a save this season.
The Quakes victory was their fourth consecutive win, their longest winning streak of the young season. They will go for the four-game sweep over the Giants on Monday evening and will return home to face the 66ers on Tuesday evening.
I watched that game on MiLB.TV. I was really impressed with Stripling. He had a mound presence that would not be expected for a second year pitcher. Of his 89 pitches, 66 were strikes.
First time I have seen Owen Jones pitch. He does look good.
