Pitching was the order of the day with five strong starts. The home run bats also started to heat up a bit.
Great Lakes Loons
The Loons won 8-3 picking up their first win of the season after three consecutive losses to the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Carlos Frias got the win with five strong innings. Frias, who was signed by the Dodgers in 2007, gave up three hits with no earned runs. He struck out six and walked two. Offensively Corey Seager collected his first hit of the 2013 with a two run home run. Third baseman Paul Hoenecke also homered. Left fielder Malcolm Holland swiped his third base of the season. Holland, age 20, is most likely the fastest minor leaguer in the Dodger system not named Dee Gordon. Holland has excellent plate discipline. He walks more often than he strikes out but does not make very good contact resulting in a low batting average.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
The Quakes won their third game of the young season with a 2-1 ninth inning victory over Lake Elsinore. The game featured a pitching duel with the Quakes prevailing. Ross Stripling who was selected in the fifth round of the 2012 draft had a dominant five innings. He gave up one hit, walked one and struck out four. Stripling induced eight ground outs contributing to two double plays. Last year with the Ogden Raptors he struck out thirty-seven and walked six. Raydal Sanchez and Pedro Baez each pitched two shutout innings. Baez now has pitched three innings for the Quakes yielding two hits, no runs, walking two and striking out three.
Chattanooga Lookouts
The Lookouts played a pair of seven inning games on Sunday winning the first game 8-0 and losing the second game to Huntsville 3-1. In the first game Andres Santiago pitched five shutout innings giving up three hits and recording four strikeouts. His dominant performance was a bit marred by four walks. Kelvin De La Cruz followed with two dominant innings of his own. He allowed two hits and struck out five with no walks. Joc Pederson had a strong game with the bat contributing a home run and a double with three runs batted in. Yasiel Puig had two hits and two runs batted in as did Rafael Ynoa.
In the second game, Rob Rasmussen made his debut with a good performance. In five innings he gave up two runs on two hits while striking out four. Rasmussen did walk four. The Lookouts were held to one hit, a first inning home run by Joc Pederson. Yasiel Puig did not play.
Albuquerque Isotopes
Javy Guerra pitched one hit ball for four innings. A second inning home run resulted in the only run he allowed. Guerra struck out four and walked two. Scott Van Slyke continued his strong start going two for three with three runs batted in. He has driven in nine runs in his first four games, all won by the Isotopes. Alfredo Amezaga went three for four while Nick Buss had four hits including a home run.
Not bad – the Baby Dodgers won 4 out of 5.
As we saw first-hand during spring training, the Dodger minor league teams are loaded with talent – especially the Isotopes and Lookouts (and that Ross Stripling fellow ).
Curious to see where the Dodger system ranks this year. Like Ron says, to me the systems seems well stocked. Can always use more though. My concern is the top players in our system all seem to be blocked by high priced or productive players on the big league roster. My guess is we’ll start to lose a bunch in AAA by the trading dead line.
